OK, I'm going to be very vague on this request. I recorded some TV shows onto a DVD-RW and tried to view them on my computer (yes, I have a DVD burner), but I can't watch (and/or record) the shows.

Anyone have this problem before? Have an idea how to proceed?

I was hoping to record my wedding video (VHS) onto a DVD-RW and move it to the computer to put it on DVD w/ a menu and shit.

some dvd recorders record a strange editable format instead of VOB files like normal dvds. this could be triggered because you're using a DVD-RW disc.

pop the disc back in your PC and see what files are on there (through explorer/my computer)

if it's a standard DVD, you should have stuff like:
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
etc.

then there's a bunch of software you can use to add a menu. check videohelp.com for more info

if you have other files, you can do a few things.

1. buy some software that will let you edit this special format and make a real DVD. i think sonic and windvd make software that do this
2. use DVD-R discs instead. your recorder will probably write normal DVD content on write-once media
3. fiddle with your recorder settings, see if there's an option to bypass the editable format, or make it finalize the discs.

i think the problem is that they're not VOB files, but i'm not sure yet.

Some DVD Recorders record in a non-DVD format that's supposed to be easier to edit, but all it does is cause problems like this.

yeah that's the weird format i was thinking of.

googled for VR_MOVIE.VRO and got this:

Quote:
It is easier to just rename the "vro" file, that is created by your ram recorder, "mpg". It works everytime for me. It will save you some time.

I then import my mpg's into dvd-lab, create menu structure & scene selection screen, its very easy. It is also pretty straight forward to edit (cut) small sections of unwanted material in DVDlab.

so that should be enough. just copy the VRO file and rename it to an MPG. then do whatever you want with it.

Sweet! I'm watching something that I recorded off the TV!!! Thanks a lot! And the software that came w/ the computer can use MPG to make DVDs.

One more question. Is there any freeware that edits (basically just clipping) mpgs?

did you record it on like tivo and then transfer it to your computer or did you record it onto your computer?

i want to get tivo or directv dvr but i didnt think there was a way to get that info onto your computer to put it on a dvd.

neither, he recorded it with a dvd recorder (that's what the whole thread is about)

as for tivo,

http://www.tivo.com/4.9.19.asp

yes you can do it with a standalone tivo. no you can't with the directv tivo. not sure about dishnetwork officially, but there are tons of people who hack them to transfer recordings from the dvr to their computers.

Leehro, I just moved a video clip from VHS, to DVD-RW, to PC, to DVD-R with a menu. You're awesome! My anniversary is on the 23rd, and I think the wife is getting all of our wedding videos moved to DVD.
