My laptop's CD drive has broken down and I'm looking into getting an external burner.

Can external burners act as an onboard drive? If I place a CD in the external burner will I be able to rip it to my harddrive?

Obviously you can burn CDs but I'm unsure if the information can go the other way. Any help or tips will be appreciated.

everything you can do with an internal you can do with an external.

i'd recommend just replacing the internal one yourself, though.

Externals, at least when connected through a USB port, will take bloody well forevery to burn a 80 minute CD - upwards of 20-25 minutes... try to replace the internal if you can.

not if it's usb 2.0 or firewire.
