I am planning on buying my girlfriend a digital camera for christmas, but I am far from an expert on digitals. Does anyone have any suggestions as far as good vs bad? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated

Any of the Canon Powershot camera's are great. The Powershot A85 is a great camera, 4.0 Megapixel for about $300.00. We've got a Powershot A60 from years ago and its still working great.

In terms of megapixels what should i be looking for? I know the more the better, but im also not looking to spend $500. Im looking to spend between $300-350....$400 TOPS

Then for $300.00, I'd go with the Canon Powershot A85. 4 megapixels is plenty big enough, unless you're going to do some professional photography and print rather large pictures. Go check out cnet.com and click on digital cameras. They'll have ratings for the cameras and average prices. Its a good way to weed out the crap from the good cameras. Or just go to your local Best Buy. They don't work on commission and are usually really helpful.

I'm getting a Canon PowerShot A95 for Christmas. 5 megapixels, 3XOptical Zoom. Its $399 at Circuit City and BestBuy. The LCD screen on this one can be turned and twisted (much similar to those on digital video cameras.).

I've got the A75 and I love it. And the good news is, I paid $249.00 for it around the beginning of August, and now it's down to $161.00 on one web site! Isn't that great?
and the site Buggy suggested is a must-see if you're serious about finding a good camera.

What are some features you'd consider essential to a good digital camera? My aunt is looking for one for her daughter. What is the cheapest camera you can get that isn't total shit?
