What's the best way to convert FLAC for the purposes of a portable listening device, such as an iPod? How do you maximize sound quality?

I think turned2black had a poem about this in the Release sub-forum.

What do you use to listen to the FLACs on your computer? Also, do you use itunes?

I actually don't listen to FLAC because I'm afraid of it, and I don't know how (or if I have to convert it). And, yes, I use itunes.

FLAC is pretty great, it's completely lossless so your music sounds better. Some don't have an ear for it but I think the benefit is especially apparent for live recordings.

There's a program that will convert them in one step called dbpoweramp. It's very easy but isn't free. Though there is a fully functional trial period of 21 days so you can go that route.

Or, you can do it in two steps by converting the FLACs to WAV using winamp, and then using itunes to convert to mp3.

And how is the sound quality if I go this route? Still superior to straight up mp3?

Well mp3s come in varying degrees of quality. Basically, the large the bitrate (amount of bits per second), the better the quality. So when you make your own mp3 from a wav file you can decide on the bitrate. I always set mine to the highest.

Thanks, man. Good info.

But any mp3 has some loss to it? Is that correct?

I'm sure there are ways, but it's not easy.

Cool. I really appreciate it. I know it comes off as schtick, but I've never been tech savy, and there aren't many people around me who will give me a straight answer on stuff like this.

Those directions are pretty straightforward but if you get confused with a step let me know.
