What's the best way to convert FLAC for the purposes of a portable listening device, such as an iPod? How do you maximize sound quality?

What do you use to listen to the FLACs on your computer? Also, do you use itunes?

I actually don't listen to FLAC because I'm afraid of it, and I don't know how (or if I have to convert it). And, yes, I use itunes.

Or, you can do it in two steps by converting the FLACs to WAV using winamp, and then using itunes to convert to mp3.

And how is the sound quality if I go this route? Still superior to straight up mp3?

Well mp3s come in varying degrees of quality. Basically, the large the bitrate (amount of bits per second), the better the quality. So when you make your own mp3 from a wav file you can decide on the bitrate. I always set mine to the highest.
