lately my computer seems very very slow and i am really not sure why... nothing has really changed with it but a few times i have had a pop up that says the virtual memory is too low and it is trying to free some...
can anyone tell me what my problem is??
i have over 11 GB free on the hard drive...
the computer is 2.53 Ghz with 1 GB ram
i dont see why it keeps getting so slow but i eventually just have to reboot to fix the problem

If you VM is getting slow, it's going to have to start using swap space, and the stuff stored in that portion of the memory isn't going to benefit from the normal memory hierarchy. Basically, your computer will crawl if you run out of memory.
I'd go to task manager and look at which process is taking up all the memory. If you press Ctrl-Alt-Del and go to task manager, open the process table, and you can sort by process. There could be a process that's gone awry, or possibly even a virus or spyware... Who knows, but if there's something taking up a whole bunch of VM and you don't know what it is, there could be a problem.

Back when virtual memory was a major slow-down issue for windows (Win 98), someone taught me a nice trick to speed things up.
Set the amount of your virtual memory manually to about 2.5 times the amount of RAM you have in your machine. It should almost always be enough, and it won’t slow down your HD too much by allocating way too much VM (which was often a problem in older windows versions).
I don’t know if this will still work, but it’s worth giving it a shot.

thanks for the tip...
i went to try to do this and it says the maximum i can set my virtual memory at is 1530 MB so that is what i did...
i just did it so we''ll see what happens...
as for the task manager i have looked in there but the few things i see that i dont know what they are must be system related because when i close them it crashes

None of them are taking up an absurd amount of memory?

Low virtual mem could be lots of things. Too many system tray apps for example or services running. Overly agressive spyware blockers and anti-virus settings can cause problems too. If the tool above doesn't help, check your system logs and look for "warning" level logging. That may give some clues. Defragging can help too.
