Sooooo I'm pretty clueless about how to set this up at home for my laptop. I have my folk's username and password so i think i can use their internet account, but there's no strong hot spot in my area.. do I need to get a wireless access point thingy? Is that right? Are they pricey?

so it's looking like i need a wireless router, is that right? anyone know anything about this?

i take it your parents have a cable modem, and you want to be able to access it via your laptop.
if so, yes, you will need a wireless access point unless your parents modem is also a wireless router. if not, you have to buy one, linksys or belkin will do, and they have really easy set up instructions to follow. its usually run off of a cd to configure it.

ok, unless you have your own cable connection, dont buy that router. theres no way you can use your parents connection living an hours drive away
basically youre looking to set up a network between your place and your parents, which is doable, but not for $60 that youre looking to spend

a microwave tower and receiver
you can create a VPN tunnel to their router, but you would still need your own connection to do so, so that point is moot
hmmmm. why can't i just log in to their account from a remote location though? i mean... i think it would work if i was just using dial up, i'm simply substituting that for wireless. they have an isdn or adsl account or something. like.... my roommate uses her parents (also an hour or so away) connection at our place via dial up.

with dial up it goes by username and password, but with dsl or cable, it goes by IP address. with the modem the company provides, one is assigned to that specific modem

ah, that helps me understand it a bit better. thanks
it's not true cable they're using though- it's kind of like high speed dial up, and they have a username and password- plus their IP is dynamic anyway. they have an ISDN moden and use ADSL (i think. at least it's one of those) so it goes over the phone line
