I am looking into a HD LCD TV. Probably a samsung 37 inch. I read up on the two formats. From what I can tell, alot of broadcasts use 720p because it moves better. But 1080i give more detail. Which is better in the long run?

I'm no expert, but I think 720p is fine for a TV under 40".

Here is the info my friend passed along. He is a bit of a techo geek, so I figured it may help you.

Quote:
well for "long run" he should really be looking at 1080p... that is what the new formats are for HD DVD and BluRay.

and if he gets a 1080i set then it will most likely display 720p. so why not just get the 1080i.

many of them upscale too.

Don't know if that helps... but there you go.

I've got a 52" projection HDTV in the living room that displays 1080i and an LCD TV in the bedroom that displays 720P and for the most part I can't tell a huge difference between the two. Where I can notice a difference, allbeit minor, is when I'm watching some sporting events. From what I can tell Fox displays their sporting events in 720P but CBS and NBC both display their events in 1080i and you can tell a bit of difference, most notably in the background crispness. As Super J said, I think that for anything under 40" I think that 720P is more than adequate, but if I was buying a TV nowadays, I wouldn't buy anything that didn't support 1080P with multiple HDMI inputs in preperation for the future.

You will not see a differance with a smaller screen. Go for the cheaper 720p.

yeah dude, stay away from interlaced whenever possible. even at 720, progressive is still the way to go. plus, you have a smaller tv, so it evens out.

There are no LCD tv's that display 1080i. They may accept 1080i as an input, but the output will be scaled to the fixed resolution of the set which is usually 720p or 768p.

I don't think this is true. My LCD displys 1080i.

I've seen that one and kicks ass! Great choice.

The resolution is fixed at 1366 x 768 pixels, but it can accept 1080i/720p/480p/480i inputs. Only CRT based sets can disply interlaced pictures, fixed pixel technology like LCD/Plasma/DLP can have only one resolution and scales the input signal to what it can display. In your case you are actually displaying a higher resolution that 720p which is good because that tv has a good quality internal scaler so your displayed iamge will look better than a 720p LCD tv.

At this point, 1080p is the only smart choice.

Im quite excited about the future of displays...OLED, laser, SED, all of them have incredible contrast and true black, so they consume less energy than Plasma and LCD

SED is the next big thing. First models should be in stores in 2008. I'm waiting until then for my next purchase. I'll either gobble up a SED, price pending, or a likely even cheaper LCD or Plasma. I doubt CRTs will be around even though they last by far the longest and produce the truest picture - it's a shame they aren't sexy and no one pushes them because of that.

My 1080i 201 pound CRT is getting "obsolete."

Dude, OLEDS seem quite impressive too, even in the pictures they image is great. You can see them here http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthre ... 125&page=2
