I don't think they will bleed through "eventually". If you write on it with a sharpie and a week later it's still fine, then you're good.
Personally, I've been writing on them with a regular sharpie for years and years and never had a problem. However, just to be safe, I buy the specific "Sharpie CD/DVD Marker". It's only about 25-50 cents more than regular sharpie and you can get them almost anywhere.

There is a modest amount of anecdotal evidence that the use of solvent-based ink markers (Sharpies use an alcohol-based ink), particularly on CD-R/RWs without a protective coating and CD-R/RWs kept in a warm to hot environment can lead to long-term penetration of the ink to the data layer with resulting damage to the data.
if ya gonna use thy sharpie, just use it on the middle clear circle of the cd/dvd. where's there's no data to be written. you will thank me in the long run.

That's what I do.
Some brands of CD/DVDs have a thicker coating on the back though, and it's obvious that the marker is not going to bleed through that.
For years I've used exclusively Fuji CDRs, and I've never trusted the coating on th backs of those, but I use Sony DVD+Rs now and I don't fear writing on those with a Sharpie.

Just checked a few that I have from 1998, that I saved for testing, and they are fine, no bleed through and they still play. Just my 2 cents.
yeah, i still have a bunch from that era and they all play fine for me (although i listened to some really shitty music back then. powerman 5000? limp bizkit? kid rock? ......dave matthews?)

i always wondered why when you do a bnp the person never writes on the dvd/cd
it's because everyone has their own "archival system" and so on - the order you write the band, date, venue, location, all that crap. not really a big deal for most people, but some traders seem to have assholes the size of a pin, and it is nicer to have your own handwriting on all your albums, honestly.
