If I dl something in rar format, how can I play it? Is there a certain device that can play it directly, or how do transfer it to something that can be played on wmp/quicktime/winamp?

rar is an archive format.

winrar is the standard program, but I thought even winzip could handle those.

To be honest, Winrar is better and easier to use.

http://www.freedownloadspace.com/winrar/

Install the program and then click the selected file(s), then click 'extract to' on the top left of Winrar and choose your location. It should be that simple.

When I tried to use that linked site it sent me to something weird that wanted me to pay.

This is the message I get when i try to extract the files to a folder:

You need to start extraction from a pervious volume to unpack.
No files to extract.

Does this mean that it's part of a series of .rar files and I need every part to Un-rar the file?

it's merely a suggestion that you should, the only thing different if you actually buy it is that that message will disappear, nothing else.

yeah its part of a batch, looks like it's missing one or more files.
