i'm hoping that someone can help me with this...
i downloaded a file that i thought was a .rar file but instead the file extension is dgr.001 (and its multipart so it goes up to dgr.040)
and i'm actually just not sure if the dgr is just part of the file name and not the extension, and maybe its a matter of changing the .001 to .r01?
i just don't want to fuck it up.

thanks

with rar files they are often split into several smaller files. in that case they have a sequential naming convention (IE 001, 002, 003, etc).
To extract the archive, you want to open the actual RAR file and then the program knows to look for the other archived files in the sequence.

thanks,
the only thing is that the other .rar files that i've downloaded have had the extension like xx.r01 (up to whatever the final one is) and the icons are actually .rar icons, whereas in this case the files are xx.001 and the icon is the generic windows icon that is given when you don't have the proper program to open the file.
however, i did change the .001 to .r01 and the icon did change to the rar icon. so i guess i'll just have to do that to all of them.

but you did bring up another question that i had, most of the times when i d/l rar files, it does come with the actual .rar file to extract all the other files, but i have a few that came with no .rar file, so is there a way to still extract the file without having the .rar file? (geez i said file a lot)

thanks again

Just because you change the file extention doesnt mean that it will work. It still has to be an actual RAR file. For example, I could take a Word.Doc file and rename it to Word.Rar and it would show up with the RAR icon. That doesnt mean it's actually a RAR file.

To extract the files of an archive you need all the files that went with the archive. As long as you have them all, it should work.

ya, i understand that... but im just assuming that it was a rar file and the extension was changed maybe, b/c all of the similar files that i've downloaded are rar files.
hopefully it will work.

thanks for the help

don't bother changing the extensions.. leave them as .001, .002, etc..

Icons are just pictures that are associated with certain file extensions. So anything named .r01 will show the rar icon. Just because you don't see the icon doesn't mean there's something wrong with the file.

Keep the files as they are, and open the first one of the series in WinRar, and then extract it.. It will extract the whole set automatically.

i used to have my flac files linked to Media Player, and i loved it that way but since i installed MKW something something to convert SHN files it also overruled the FLAC association with Media Player. i've tried to change it back when you go to tools > folder options > filetypes > flac. but for some reason i can't apply it, and when i click OK it basically does the same thing as canceling.

i tried different extensions to see if maybe my windows is fucked, but it worked fine with others.

how do i associate FLAC's back with the mediaplayer?

right click on a flac file and choose properties. There should be a section that says Opens With, and then has the associated program. Change the program back to WMP and it should change the association. You might want to reboot since sometimes the icons won't change.

i'm pretty sure i tried that as well, but i'll try it again. it sucks that i have to unhide ALL extension because right now all FLAC's are showing as SHN's and thats the easiest way to show that in actuality it's a FLAC file :x

but thanks, i'll try that tonight.

yeah that didn't do shit. thing is that it still opens fine with Mediaplayer, but it's that where under "type" it says "Compressed Audio (Shorten)" for both FLAC and SHN, so i can't tell a difference unless i unhide all extensions.

did you reboot? also did you check the properties in the MKW program to make sure that it wasn't associating itself with any filetypes it shouldn't be?

ALWAYS show all extensions. Hiding extensions is the stupidest feature winblows has to offer.

But maybe that's just me being someone who frequently has to mess with data files. :?
