My parents got me a laptop for my graduation, and I'm going to be receiving it today. Now, I have about 10,000 mp3s on my desktop computer that I would love to transfer to my laptop without actually burning all my CD's to iTunes again. Is there some fast, much less painful way to do this?

So are you saying there's no way to do this?
You'd expect more help from admin. I think devil is implying that it can be done if you connect your 2 computers via a network. LAN.
yeah
1) Create workgroup. With desktop connected to the network, (a) Go to Control Panel -> System -> Computer Name -> Change Computer Name. Set the name of the workgroup, if it's not set already. If you change it, reboot. 2) On laptop, connected to the same router, do the same thing, making sure the workgroup name is the same. 3) Go to Network Neighborhood -> Entire Network -> View Workgroup Computers 4) Move files

Can you just come to my house and do this for me?
haha... It's really not that hard. Just hook both computers up the the network, make sure they're in the same workgroup, and share the files.
Maybe if you can't figure it out, I'll put together a tutorial when I get home.

Yeah, it's just the thing is that I'm really not tech savvy at all. I know my way around a computer when it comes to teh internetz and I can work with Windows fairly well, but I don't have a clue with any technical stuff like that. I don't even know what a router is, other than it has to do with computers.

whats up with this here proprietary Apple Firewire business?
It's apple. Everything is proprietary. That's why they charge an arm and a leg for their products, while other equally good alternatives are usually much cheaper.

Is that capacity even necessary?
It's nice for doing anything related to video production.

the only problem with this is that I don't know how to connect the two computers to the same network. I don't have a wireless connection with my laptop at my house, I can only access the internet on my laptop through the ethernet cable that's normally hooked up to my desktop computer.

First, open up My Network Places or Network Neighborhood or whatever. Click Entire Network. Click Microsoft Windows Network. You should see a little computer thing with the name of a workgroup. If they're set up correctly, there will be only one workgroup (probably called "WORKGROUP"). Click on that. Then you'll see all the computers in your workgroup. You should see all of the computers that are currently connected to the same network (they should all be connected to the same router, which is the thing with four or five holes in the back and some blinking lights). If you click on a computer, you'll see all the folders that are currently shared.
To share a folder, go on your desktop, open My Computer, and right click on the drive/folder you want shared. Choose "Sharing" or "Sharing and Security" or something like that. Then click "New Share", give it a name, and make sure "Everyone" has read permission. After you apply these changes, the shared folder should show up on the other computer.
