So I am thinking aboot getting one...I plan on using it mostly when lifting weights.

I assume that the one with the biggest memory would be the best choice.

It still seems like not a whole lot of memory when talking about Flac files. I could fill up one of those fuckers so fast with just PJ alone.

So what are you guys doing?

Just filling it with mp3's and tolerating the reduced quality and GAPS IN BETWEEN SONGS? :x

Are you using Rockbox and storing Flac files?

I am too afraid to mess with Rockbox as of yet, but I just convert FLAC to wav and put them on the Ipod.

Yeah, that's simple enough. But doesn't that just take up a shitload of room? Are you just kind of putting a few shows on there and then taking them off and replacing them with others as you go along?

And that would still have gaps between tracks, am i wrong? Rockbox claims no gaps between tracks.

Are you afraid to mess with Rockbox because you don't want it to fuck up your current configuration? That wouldn't be an issue with a brand new, ipod right?

- Thanks

192kbs mp3 has been perfect for me. Great balance between quality and file size.

I have almost exactly 4000 songs on my 30gb with 5.5gb of free space left. Every single song is 192kbs.

Stick with a 60gb iPod video.

you just kind of have to deal with it... you'll be at the gym or in your car, and the small gap really won't take away the enjoyment of listening to live PJ.... (or whatever)

I have 30GB video with Rockbox installed and i just upload 1 or 2 FLAC shows at a time. I have my ipod mostly so i can have hundreds of albums at my disposal at work or in the car. I leave about a gig or 2 free for when i want to listen to a lossless show, but i never keep them on there for extended periods.

I will say that the larger ipods are cumbersome when trying to work out. Unless you have an armband they are virtually impossible to run with without weighting down your shorts. Even when weight lifting i find it digs into me when i move around. It's great for biking however, as long as i have a bookbag with me. If your primary usage is for working out, i wouldn't recommend getting a large ipod. Just get a nano and save yourself some money. I believe Rockbox can still be installed on the nano, but you might want to check to make sure.

Yes. My fear of Rockbox is messing up my current config. I would imagine if I felt like clearing everything, then I would take a stab at it.

Obviously, the wavs do take up more room. So I do move things on and off fairly often.

And yes, the gaps piss me off.

Do you use Rockbox all the time or do you use the default ipod program when you aren't listening to lossless?

I use the factory ipod software for everything else, and just boot into Rockbox for the lossless stuff. Because ipod uses its own database and renames the files to a bunch of unintelligible garble, it's impossible for rockbox to properly navigate it. When i want to put a lossless show on my ipod i just treat it like an external drive and copy it onto the disk using windows explorer. Rockbox will read the file no matter where on the ipod HD you put it. If i wanted to go 100% rockbox, i could wipe everything from my ipod with itunes, and drag all the mp3s over by folder and i would never have to touch the ipod software....but i actually like it. You can get a few different skins for Rockbox (including an ipod and a winamp one) but i still think the ipod software is nicer looking and is more fluid.

I'm thinking of buying a Nano as a gift and I have a question: How does it recharge, through the USB cable? Or do I need to purchase a seperate charger?

when i got mine 2 years ago it came with USB cable, FireWire cable and charger cable.

Firewire charges the ipod, USB doesn't.

As far as i know, ipod only comes with USB and it does charge it. You can purchase a wall adapter for charging and you just use the USB cord with that.

it charges when plugged into the computer? because that's what i do, i barely charge it in the wall, just firewire it to the PC and it'll charge.

i've never heard of USB transmitting power too coming from the pc.

The newer iPods only come with a USB cable, no firewire and no charger. It charges through USB. If you use an old firewire cable and connect it to the computer it'll charge but not sync the iPod. In order to reduce the size of the iPod they took the firewire chip out.
