I looked into Nero Showtime, but it doesn't seem to offer what I'm looking for.

I want to take the home videos from my camcorder, and be able to edit/cut/create transitions/add a soundtrack/make menus and chapters/burn to DVD.

Suggestions?

Adobe Premiere
Adobe Encore DVD

the first one is quite easy to use.
you need more training for the second program.

i work with Final Cut and i love it. but it only works in Macs

use Premeire. ir's easy to use. or maybe Vegas Video.

'08, I gotta get down in gear on the Adobe Premiere & Adobe Encore DVD softwares. I'm trying some stuff out, taking some old vhs > dvd. But not having a good time with menu creating.

Is that Premiere that you're talking about? What's the problem?
