So my 500GB Western Digital is close to kicking the bucket, and I'm looking to grab a new one. I'm especially interested in buying an enclosure and an internal hard drive to go with it. Right now, I'm looking at using this combo:

Enclosure: http://www.amazon.com/Antec-MX-100-Alum ... 549&sr=8-2

Hard drive: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-ST3100034 ... pd_sim_e_2

I have a few questions for people who have done this before:

1) What's the active life of an internal drive in an enclosure? I have been using my external for about a year, pretty much every day, and it feels like it's going to burn out in a few days. Do build-your-owns tend to last longer?

2) The combo I've selected above will be swappable between my PC and my Mac, right?

3) Are there any slightly-more expensive enclosures out there with cooling systems that are compatible with Macs?

Thank you and goodnight.

I bought a really cheap enclosure to put my harddrive in a couple of years ago and it's worked great ever sense. I had a PC desktop that shit the bed and put the harddrive with all my music on it in an enclosure. It works great ever sense and I use it on my macbook at home and PCs at work.
