so i was running whichever instrument into the amp and then another 1/4 jack from the direct out in the amp with the other end modified into 3.5 mm. to fit the mic jack in my comp. It would not record except through my shitty computer mic. I came to learn that my comp like any comp could not read analog. so that was that.

The other day i learned of the light snake which runs from a 1/4 jack to ur usb input and it apparently eliminates this problem. will this actually be any different? I'm confused and I also just read that some people had been recording in the exact form that I had attempted to in the first place. I want concrete answers please.

The principal issue, as I recall, is that the impedance in the electric signal from the guitar/amp do not work with the computer. I'm not familiar with the light snake so I can't really comment on that. Where have you seen that people have been successfully recording with your original method? I'd be curious to see that.

My solution was to purchase the line6 TonePort UX1. you can use it to record from an instrument or a vocal microphone. it essentially replaces your amp (plug your guitar in to it) and then run the usb from there to your computer. it sends a signal that your computer can read. works like a charm for me. they include software which simulates many amps and effects. some sound great while others sound pretty digital. nonetheless it works fine for recording and makes taking a guitar to college or whatever much less difficult for those tight on space.

i found mine i think for somewhere around 120 dollars, and haven't regretted the purchase since.

so anyway the straight up plugging your guitar into the mic jack has no way of working and im not insane for believing so? Anyway apparently this light snake takes care of it/also you can run it from the amp which gives me the option of recording anything, as i put vox through the bass amp. Anyway yeah my question was just that this would not be another option that in the end wouldnt work. Because I got absolutely nothing by plugging the guitar into the mic jack.

So I got one of these the other day:

and it has been a pain in the ass to get working. Cubase works fine but getting the device to be recognised is proving impossible.

Its a USB audio interface but apparently I need a sound card that is compadible with recording hardware. Anyone have any ideas?

I run an E-MU 0404 on my XP box and I love it. I'm actually gonna beef up my extra bedroom into a mini-studio (mostly plug-in based stuff. I don't have room for a drumset in here or lots of amps)...I picked up a pair of these at a ssssmoookin' deal through work and am looking forward to setting things up proper once they get here.
