Our computer is 7 years old and the fan has gone bad and it was not a high end computer to begin with. I don't feel like putting more money into a computer that is out of date. Anyway, I just would like some advice about how big of a computer I need. We primarily use our computer for email, internet, loading pictures and downloading and storing music. I probably have 3,000 or 4,000 songs in iTunes. We don't play video games or anything else. Other than storing a few documents, there isn't much else we use it for.
Would a 250 GB Hard Drive with 3GB of RAM be big enough or should I go with 640 GB hard drive with 4GB of RAM? Or is the second one just overkill?

If you are going for Vista, ram is good, if its XP 1gb does the job already. About the processor, get some some 2 Core, no need to go beyond 2.4ghz.

That's about right.
I just built a computer from Dell about 6 months ago, and I pumped it up pretty good to be able to do HD audio and video (although I'm sure that will all be standard in a year), and it still only cost me about $1000 including a new monitor. If you're doing simple home stuff with it only, you can go with the base box from them and get a nice new machine for about half that, and it will meet or exceed all the specs HB listed.

2nd choice, with the ram is overkill. As for hard drive space, the more the better. Downloading audio/video/pictures .. backup's/copies/programs etc.. it's great to have more space on your PC!

not completely true on the hard drive space
usb storage is cheap enough now and acts as a very credible backup should something go wrong, whether its with the computers OS or if something more fatal happens (ie fire)
