Post subject: Switching to cable...need a good modem/wireless router

Suggestions? It's $10/month to lease a modem/router from the cable company, so I'd like to keep the cost down to make it a better deal than what I'll pay over the course of six months to a year.

your best bet is to do the rent off of the cable company. if you should get a power surge and your protection fails, they are on the book for it. if not, have fun shopping for a new one

I have no recollection of an electronic device failing due to power surges. How often does this occur? I understand that basic surge protector power strips offer meagre protection, but is this a probable event?

its not just power surges, any one who has dealt with electronics knows things can just stop working. renting from the cable company for what little they charge exonerates you from having to make a new purchase of a modem for any reason

troof, i've had to replace mine a couple times and all i have to do is drop it off and grab a new one.
