wouldn't even boot up...it'd sit at the "hp" logo when you first turn it on and would just sit there...couldnt hit f10 for recovory...couldnt do anything. tried just about everything to boot it up and couldnt. assigned the HD as a slave on another computer and could not access any files. tried reinstalling windows on the HD, but the windows disc i have is "an upgrade disc" and thus cannot install xp by itself since it is not a "full version" ( ), so i format the drive and successfully install windows 98 on it. works great (except, you know, it's windows 98). so i begin installing xp on it via the upgrade and everthing's going great for about an hour. it reformats the drive to use xp (there was no other available option) and begins copying files. it gets about halfway done copying files and then i get an error saying it cannot proceed to to a data error cyclic redundacy problem and that i need to clean the disc. i look at the disc, disc isn't dirty. there is a very small, slight bubble on the very, VERY outside edge of the disc that looks like a defect to the disc itself, so maybe that's where the error comes from, but the disc itself is almost spotless with that one exception. i really dont know what to do from here. the comp will just restart itself, get back to the setup screen and try to read the disc again before failing. it doesnt even tell me what it is it's trying to install specifically. what the hell do i do? is there a way to hook the drive up as a slave like before and install windows to it that way? as it stands right now the disc boots up with the xp logo and then goes right into trying to install it, so i dont even know if that's an option.
and yes, i know "get a mac". get bent, it's my dad's computer.

my point about it being dads comp is that he is used to windows and doesn't like change, but thanks anyway paddy. i guess i will have to check out windows 7. even that will probably be too much of a change for him
