The studio I use in my studio started running slow a few days ago, and last night it wouldn't open any large programs (small programs ran just fine). Even though it's not connected to the internet I ran the usual programs and tried all the entry level fixer stuff. Yeah yeah yeah.

The fan sounded like it was running, and I thought that maybe since small programs would run and I hadn't had it turned off in a year or so it might help it to shut down. I transfered all my audio data to an external hard drive and shut it down.

Now, when it turns on, it shows the Windows XP opener stuff and then goes to a black screen with a mouse cursor. It does the same thing when I try to run safe mode.

The kicker to all this is that I can't run a Windows fixer cos the computer was donated, and they never gave me the CD for XP. I guess I haven't looked to see if there are pirated versions of the Windows repair options, but for some reason I assume there aren't.

Any ideas?

Don't all XP CDs have a repair option? I thought they did, but I could be wrong. I think when I installed XP Pro over XP Home it first asked me if I wanted to repair.

If a copy of XP will help, let me know.

I have an older version of it though...the one I used for my family computer. You think it will let me use that to repair?

Yeah, I figured you might have another copy floatin' around. I think it should run the repair regardless of what CD was used for the install.

Also, I ran into some problems that this website helped me with. See the "How To Run a Repair Install," section.

So I don't know the administrator password. How annoying is that.

Have to have it to use windows recovery.

Tried both. In the end, I just reinstalled Windows. Hells bells. No it's a matter of reinstalling all the equipment and whatnot.

I know I am way too late, but in the future, you might wanna try a program called ERD Commander. When you burn it to a cd and restart the computer with that cd in cd-drive, it loads the program, and one option called "Locksmith" lets you change any password that's been set on the computer.
