When I first bought my laptop it wouldn't connect to the wireless internet. I went on a board and changed some default settings and now it works. Now I have a friend who has the same problem but I forget how I did it. Can anyone help me out? I believe they are also using Vista.

Try disabling encryption on the router to see if it is a problem of encryption. This will be an important clue to what is the problem. Simply open the Network centre and Sharing centre by clicking Start, typing the word network in the Start Menu Search box and click Network and Sharing centre link in the centre of the search results. In the left navigation pane, click Manage wireless networks. Then, right click on your wireless network connection and select Properties. Click the check box Connect even if network is not broadcasting and click OK to save changes.
