The eBay cable arrived today aka I'm on my own laptop again.

Um so yeahhhh. My laptop is dying a sad, long drawn out death.

Fans have stopped working completely so I have to use a real fan pointed towards the vents to keep it cool.

I have to have it plugged into the wall all the time (This isn't really a problem except that the cable is splitting and will only charge when the cable is positioned in a certain way. When I try to adjust the cable, little sparks come out of it (kind of cool!) It smells like burnt rubber when it sparks. A lil smoke comes out too.)

Ummm what else?! Oh, the left hinge that keeps the monitor attached to the keyboard is almost completely broken off.

So how much time does this lil guy have left?

(I usually use electronics until they completely crap out on me (I still use my 5th generation ipod, my cell phone is 2 years old, my 20 year old turntable recently broke (bought a new one already though))

Wow, I would have chucked it after the fans went and certainly after the power cable started smoking.

Hope you didn't spend too much on the replacement power supply. Sometimes its cheaper just to get a new one, especially when so many other things are failing.

I bought the replacement adapter on ebay for $7 (^_^)

I'm still using this same laptop, you guys. Yupdate: The left hinge that attaches the screen to the keyboard is cracked and I have to have it at a weirdo angle so that the screen won't look all zonked out aka lines all over it.

Halp me choose a new laptop, Patrick :3

Search google shopping for "asus laptop", sort by price, skip ahead til you're around $1000 and work your way back.

Or you could just use the Advanced Search filters and state your price range instead of doing it the retard Peter Clarke way.

Wow, you actually have a lot of options with that budget, and anything will be an improvement over a laptop that is falling apart in front of you.

Hmmm... I would say hold off until you can get one based on the sandy bridge architecture. Intel is just releasing the desktop models and I assume laptop ones aren't too far behind. I'm not really sure when they're scheduled to be release though.

The sandy bridge cpus have significantly improved power efficiency and improved performance. Which means they should get some nice battery life and shouldn't get as hot. Also they've put the graphics on the chip so that's a pretty big game changer. Not going to be high end graphics but from what I'm hearing it is miles ahead of Intel's integrated graphics of the past and will handle all the mainstream needs.
