Hey guys,

I was recently relocating my turntable, and accidentally pulled out the ground cable. Not a big deal, since it's a plug that is designed to be removed. The problem is that I set aside the cable for a minute, and seem to have misplaced it somewhere. I've looked everywhere to no avail. I know, I'm a dumbass.

ANYWAY, I've been looking online for a replacement, but no one seems to offer one, at least not one I know will work for sure. Part numbers don't match, or pictures don't look like the one that came off of mine. I'm not afraid to get in there and modify, or replace parts with aftermarket, but would rather do so knowing that the problem is being solved, not just hoping. Really, anything to get rid of the hum that I can try right away would be great. I've tried attaching a makeshift ground wire to each of the screws on the chassis, but no dice. Tried just shoving a wire into the ground cable socket, still no luck. I haven't opened her up yet, but I'm tempted. Tech info on SL-D30 is kinda scarce on the web, or so it would appear.

I really love the sound of this thing, so it would be a shame to have to replace it, particularly since its just due to a missing ground cable. Any Ideas???

Just take a piece of speaker wire, strip the casing off the end, and shove it in the ground wire plug on the turn table. Hold it in place with electrical tape if you need to to make it stay. Then just use that to ground it. I have the same turntable and that's what I do.

Well it sounds like you tried that. You're attaching the other end of the wire to a piece of metal somewhere, right?

Yeah. Not working for some reason. Even went so far as to fashion my own cable out of an old volt/ohm meter lead, since they have those little springs on the ends. Just seemed like a better fix than just mashing a wire in there. No good. Trying your way again tonight when I get home, but not holding out a lot of hope. Anything else you can think of that I could try while I'm at it?

It's just strange because a ground wire isn't like the other wires your plugging in there. You don't need a super tight connection with a specific plug. You just need a copper wire going from the ground output to a piece of metal somewhere. When I did it with my turn-table it was easy and worked perfectly. Every so often the ground wire falls out and I just jam it back in there and the hum immediately goes away. I have the other end threaded around a screw on the light switch panel on the wall behind it.

See, I had it attached to the back of my receiver most recently, but I've even attached it to the preamp before with no issues. I wonder if I might've damaged the connection on the inside when the plug got yanked out. I was walking with it, and the cable was dangling out in front of me and I stepped on it as I carried it to the next room. That would be really weird since I didn't see any evidence of damage to my TT or the cable. A friend says to open it up and attach to any screw inside that is on metal. Like I said, not afraid to open her up, just don't want to unless I'm fairly convinced it's gonna work.

Yeah you might have severed the connection when yanking the cable out.

I think I will try opening it up tonight and see what happens. I should just be able to take the bottom cover off without any real hassle, huh? It's been a while and I am absolutely jonesing for my vinyl. My wife just got me a nice pair of noise cancelling cans and virgin vinyl that's begging to be played.

Thanks for your help, and quick responses.
