Avast (which I use) or Microsoft Security Essentials. Either one of them, plus occasional on-demand scans with SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes' AntiMalware.

so my laptop got a trojan virus today. i managed to isolate it and get rid of it, but now if i want to run a program, i have to run it as an administrator (windows 7). i tried a few things suggested online elsewhere and they haven't done the trick. anyone dealt with this issue before?

During the course of removing the trojan, did you change the permission level of your account? I'd double check that, I suppose. What did you use to remove the infection? To be sure that it was indeed thoroughly removed, do another scan with a different app. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scans pretty slow, but it's also one of the best at removing stubborn infections.

the weird thing was that a supposed windows malware that i've never seen kept popping up alerting me of the virus (i use AVG), but it wanted me to purchase the software before it'd do anything. i just assumed it may be part of the virus, trying to get you to provide your CC info, etc.

i just delete the rky.exe that appeared to be the trojan. not sure if that fully removed it, but it's stopped that mysterious malware from popping up again.

If that's all you did, you definitely want to scan with malwarebytes and clean your registry with ccleaner.

You assumed correctly. [See: scareware]

I'm no malware removal pro, but I'd definitely recommend doing full scans with some free versions of legit scanners to be sure your system is clean.

No. Malwarebytes (and similar applications) will often find stuff not detected on a standard anti-virus.

alright, ran malwarebytes and ccleaner. still having the "run as admin" issue, but i'll mess with the security settings some more now that the virus is contained. thanks, fellas.

Just to add to chud's point, if your antivirus has already failed to block (or even detect) the malware in the first place, you can't really expect it to do a good job of removing the infection. Grab this (which you already have, it appears) and this and do full scans with each (not at the same time). Although it's bad to have more than one antivirus installed and running at once, it's handy to have other, more specialized scanning tools you can call on, especially in situations like this. Who knows what other crap may uncover in the process.

The most effective way to get rid of this shit is overkill.
