i'm receiving docx files over gmail from someone, we both have ms word 2007. when i open the word files, they have all sorts of symbols and letters that aren't supposed to be there. i've tried conversions, but nothing seems to get rid of them. does anyone know what i can do to receive these files cleanly, without the unwanted text?
If your friend isn't having issues, ask them to open & re-save the files as DOC instead of DOCX and resend them. Also, perhaps there are oddball fonts used in the documents that you don't have installed?
yeah, i had to go in and take out all the symbols manually. after going through two documents, i realized that the symbols were replacing commas and apostrophes and denoting bold text, so yeah, i had to go back and redo it. still, now knowing that, it shouldn't be too much of a hindrance forging ahead.

It's not our fault we didn't identify the solution for old Spike here, as he misidentified the problem. It wasn't an ms word 2007 issue, it was a wordpad issue.

i disagree. ms word 2007 should be way more suave than it is.

You should just get OpenOffice.

go on...
Actually, you want to check out LibreOffice. It's a fork of OpenOffice that has eclipsed it in features and stability. It's the new go-to free alternative to MS Office.
