Seriously, if there's an audience recording that you like look at the notes for the microphone they used. Then later on when you see that microphone in the notes for another show there's a chance it will be another good recording.

Surely you can see how something like this would intimidate me:
Code:
Source: Sony Electret Condensor, Plug-In Type ECM-DS70P Mic. > Sony MD MZ-NH700 @ Hi-SP. Transfer: MiniDisc Optical Out > Sonic Stage V2.1.02.09031 > Soundblaster Live > Sound Forge 7.0 > Wave > CD Wave Split > cd-r. Location: Red Level, Section 101, Row P, Seat 4. About 60' From the Left Stack of Speakers. Quality: Very Good+/Excellent-, 8/10 Rating.

Good advice.
I think the "soundboard" title in that little collection doing the rounds is a bit misleading; there's very few recordings in there comparable to an official bootleg. In most cases, I'd take a good audience recording over the slapdash combinations you'll find in there.

You really don't need to understand that stuff to help tell a good recording from bad, Reid. It's just tech geek info, it won't really tell you much. Just listen to a lot.

I get that listening is the easiest way, but I'm genuinely interested in all of this tech geek stuff. Also, I don't think that I have the same resources as most of you. It's a big to-do to listen to one of these boots, if you are me. I have very little space on my hard drive, so once I convert something and burn it to a disc, I delete it.
This means that to compare copies, I am having to convert selected songs from multiple sources of the same show, play it on itunes before I burn it, and then pick one. The murkiness of a few of these shows just makes it hard to distinguish crappy from crappier sound, and it's just such a tedious process. I'd love to be able to read the show's info and say, yeah, this one is going to sound good.
