If this thread would be better off merged with the big FAQ thread, I understand. Sorry in advance.

These are the acronyms I come across most often when I am trying to decide what a bootleg is going to sound like. I would like to be familiar with them enough to rank them in order of highest quality to lowest quality. Here is what I've come up with so far, in no particular order:

SBD-soundboard? (what exactly is a soundboard?)
PRE-FM-a soundboard that hasn't been aired on FM radio yet?
MONO-Monaural
ALD-??
AUD-Audience recording?
___ PROMO-??
ANA-Analog soundboard recording?
SV-??
EAC-????
ANALOG-1-Analog recording?
MATRIX-A mix of two or more sources
DSBD-Digital soundboard?

So, anyone want to humor me? I'd be eternally grateful. (yes, I know I could google these, but I like threads and interaction so much better.)

SBD = Soundboard
Pre-FM = The audio feed that was sent to the radio station before it was sent on the air. This is usually done through a satellite or ISDN (high quality phone line) and is significantly better quality than what you hear on the air
Mono = Mono, as in one audio channel and no right/left distinction.
ALD = Assisted listening device. People who are hearing impared can request headphones at concert venues that hook into an audio feed coming from the soundboard. Though not as good as true soundboards usually, they're better than audience recordings. Some tapers will request access to these and plug their recorder into it instead of headphones.
AUD = Audience recording.
EAC = Exact Audio Copy. It's the best software for ripping an exact copy of an audio CD. If your source is a CD, this should be used to rip it.
Matrix = A mix from more than one source, played on top of each other.

Thanks for the help. That clears a lot up. It also explains why you probably hate the sound on those cds I burned you without using EAC.

Honestly, not using EAC is really no big deal.

It's just good practice for putting together audio projects that are going into circulation because you know you are starting with an EXACT copy.

Those are CDs made by sony and KROQ (or another radio station) as promotional material. One example would be the Give Way Promo which contains much of Melbourne 98.

Are they the preferable source in a multi-sourced show like Melbourne '98?

Okay, thanks.

Another question: The easiest/most convenient way for me to listen to these shows is to convert them to .wav and burn them to CDs. Am I doing it wrong?

Pete (or anyone), can you give me a run down of some red flags that I have a poorly sourced show on my hands? Besides obvious examples like the show we discussed last week, I mean.

Heyyyy guys.

This is good advice. The acronyms are really just source info, they're useful but they're not going to be very helpful in figuring out what sounds great and what doesn't unless it's something really obvious.

I guess what I'm getting at is that on shows/tours that I'm unfamiliar with (basically anything that's not 2000 or 2003), I don't have a good reference point of what sounds good or bad. To my ears, it sounds like Mike declined to play fills on the West Coast shows in '95, and it sounds like Dave A. used a very weird/hollow tone on his bass drum in '93. It's possible that I have poorly sourced shows or didn't convert them right, but it's also possible that this is just the reality of those tours. I just don't know. It's frustrating.

What shows in particular are you referring to? Maybe I can help.

Apart from shows that were mixed with the intention of being heard by a listener (such as an official bootleg), you're going to encounter some weirdness in mixing and sound.

Say, for instance, those West Coast 1995 shows - with the exception of Salt Lake #1 on November 1st, they're all pretty poor quality mono SBDs mixed with audience recordings. You won't get any definition between Mike, Stone or Ed's guitars as they're all coming through only one audio channel - opposed to a professionally mixed official boot, where Mike is in the left channel, Stone in the right and Ed near the middle.

I don't think those things you're identifying are errors of conversion on your part, nor sound choices by the band. I think they're just limitations of the recordings - officially mixed bootlegs would sound dramatically different.

The ones that I have in my mind are Indio '93 and the run of Salt Lake/San Jose/San Diego '95. Of those three '95 shows, one sounds distinctly bad, but I can't think of it at the moment. Soldier Field isn't that great of a sound to my ears either, but I didn't notice that until I tried to make a compilation of SBD tracks to run with. The songs I used (Habit and Whipping) really stood out as sounding thin, for lack of a better word.

This clears up a LOT. Thank you. So...there's really no way for bootleggers to get a better sound out of these shows, correct?

Better microphones.
