Basically, we need to reformulate our system of law to have an age of consent more reflective of reality. My suggestion would probably be something like 13. Note that this means I would advocate legalizing drinking, drugs, sex, leaving school, etc at this age. I don't think it means that they should be allowed to drink as well. You can join the military at 17 with parents consent and 18 without. So the drinking age needs to be at least that low. why? |

Honestly, this is where people rely too much on data based evidence when they really don't need to. Common sense tells us that a 13 year old and a 15 year old are vastly different in the way they see the world and make decisions. Talk to a 15 year old, and then talk to a 13 year old, you'll see it. |

One of my best friends just got his Masters in psychology and he is very rarely willing to make broad claims like that. For one, I find it unlikely that Mecca ever heard something like that in an undergraduate classroom, and if he did, that means it is widely accepted and well-documented. Being a psychology student in college doesn't mean you can say things like "yeah 15 is ok but 13 isn't" anymore than I can, as a philosophy student, say "X is morally right and Y is morally wrong" without backing it up. And there is also a "huge" difference between 15 and 17 year olds. And 11 and 13 year olds. Common sense also tells us that 13 and 15 year olds are very alike in many ways, and that the difference between the two almost always has to do with what age they started puberty. |

Sure. That much is clear. But what about at 15? In fact, I'm a lot less concerned with hormones than I am with actual brain function. At 13 people are taking advanced math courses and learning critical thinking in school. Their emotions are certainly up and down, but then again emotions are up and down for basically all adult humans too. If we use emotional maturity as a reference, most people would never be allowed to drink or have sex. |
