The fact that Europe and Canada wear pants has no bearing upon whether or not we walk around pants-less waving our dicks in the air.

Yeah, we pretty much ape Europe...this is obvious when one looks at our epic love of soccer and Madness.

What about the fact that it's expensive, inhumane, barbaric, and not a disincentive to crime.

Expense is the #1 reason, and really the only reason necessary, that I am against the death penalty in its current iteration.
I wouldn't argue that it is more inhumane than keeping someone in prison for life. I'd say it can actually be more humane.
Barbaric, maybe. Then again, maybe not. I think that part of a civilized society involves being able to make the choice that certain individuals, through their actions, can forfeit their right to belong to that society.
I've never viewed the death penalty as a disincentive, and never felt that that was it's purpose or needed to be it's purpose. The death penalty, in my eyes, is justice, and justice requires no external motivation.

We should do everything we can to simplify the appeals process, and quit going the expensive lethal injection route. Firing squad and hanging would be much cheaper, although hanging might have trouble not qualifying as cruel and unusual punishment.

Well shit, people are still killing each other even though they know they could go to jail for it, so I guess jail isn't a deterrant either.
