Author Hunter S. Thompson Commits Suicide

Feb 20, 11:19 PM (ET)

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) - Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counter-culture author of books such as "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself Sunday night at his Aspen-area home, his son said. He was 67.

"Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family," Juan Thompson said in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News.

Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis, a personal friend of Thompson, confirmed the death to the News. Sheriff's officials did not return calls to The Associated Press late Sunday.

This shouldn't be that surprising, right?

Why, because he was nuts? I never really expected a suicide though. Was he suffering from cancer or something?

Was it an actual suicide or was he just fucking around with a gun?

I'm surprised. Hell, if I thought he'd end up killing himself I would have expected it much earlier in his life.

I hate hearing about suicides. They really really bother me after having gone through one just this last year. I still just get this queesy feeling when thinking about it...

R.I.P. Mr. Thompson. You shall be missed.

So it wasn't that much of a surprise? You all are some callous mother-fuckers.
Whatever.

Personally, I find it tragic. Brilliant, insightful, sharp tongued, funny, and one of the true shapers of his generation not to mention proceeding ones.

Just fucking tragic.

I love Thompson as much as the next person, but I am not at all suprised. It has nothing to do with being callous. I own three of his books, and think he was a genius in his younger days before he fried out. I would like to hear more details though. I never thought of him as the type to intentionally off himself, but I could easily see him getting fucked up and trying to shoot the bats out of his head.

Well, to make this a bit more callous, my autographed fear and loathing poster just went WAY up in value.

OK, that was bad. I wonder what would drive a 67 year old to suicide.

Sorry, I don't find suicide a reason to get upset. He wanted to die and now he's dead. Where is the sorrow in that?

EDIT: And we don't talk shit about the Patriots, ever!!
