Road kill candy angers animal rights activists
Kraft: 'We didn't mean to offend anyone'
Friday, February 25, 2005 Posted: 9:41 AM EST (1441 GMT)

TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) -- Animal rights activists are disgusted by a new candy from Kraft Foods Inc. that's shaped like critters run over by cars -- complete with tire treads.

The fruity-flavored Trolli Road Kill Gummi Candy -- in shapes of partly flattened snakes, chickens and squirrels -- fosters cruelty toward animals, according to the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

"It sends the wrong message to children, that it's OK to harm animals. And that's the wrong message, especially from a so-called wholesome corporation like Kraft," said society spokesman Matthew Stanton.

The society is considering petition drives, boycotts and letter-writing campaigns to get the candy pulled from the market, Stanton said.

After receiving a complaint from the NJSPCA Wednesday, Kraft officials pulled an animated advertisement from Trolli's Web site that featured car headlights and animals.

No other decisions on changes have been made, said Kraft spokesman Larry Baumann.

"If you look across the Gummi category we certainly have many products that are offbeat, and that's what we were doing in this case," Baumann said. "We didn't mean to offend anyone."

Stupid, tasteless thing to make, but pretty stupid thing to get worked up about in my opinion.

would someone explain to me what a "moral" candy is?
Does it go to church on Sunday? Does it raise it's kids to be fine, upstanding candy citizens of the United States?
What is it?
Candy isn't moral or immoral. It's a bunch of sugar in a loud wrapper.
And when I think about it, if it HAD to be one or the other, I'd call candy immoral to begin with since it's only function is to rot teeth and make people fat.

Ya know what? If you don't like the candy, don't buy it.
It's a gimmick. Let it go. It does not say it's "okay to harm animals." In fact, i think it does one better - they're trying to advocate not eating live candy animals!!
Don't eat that perfectly heathy peep, eat this chicken that's already been killed!!

I think I'm like the anti-activist. I WANT to be exposed to everything. Bad things happen - ignorning them doesn't make them go away. Sometimes making something silly or pointless, or even damn fucking tasteless, is a good way to deal with all the shitty shit that goes on in the world.

Bring it on, I say. I'm on the path to ultimate enlightenment.

Absolutely, positively ridiculous. Images of Conservatives going after Disney or "video game violence" come directly to mind. Aren't these the same people that are loud in their denouncement of the right wing for the exact same brand of paralyzing stupidity?

Actually, they taste pretty good :li:

Yes, I know that not all animal rights activists would waste their time on something as inane as this.

Don't those gummi snacks contain gelatin?

If so, should they protest them even if they were shaped like plants?
