Anyone catch Bush's Freudian slip? "We WILL NOT have a volunteer army! I ... uh ... I mean we WILL have a volunteer army!"

Meh. You know how many times I've forgotten the word "not" in one of my posts here and completely changed the meaning of what I was trying to say.
There enough to criticise about what this guy MEANS to say, or means NOT to say.

We all do it. It doesn't make it any less entertaining.

Considering that High Schools are being made to hand over lists of Juniors and Seniors to the government under threat of federal funding being cut to them if they do not (under the No Child Left Behind thing), this Freudian slip is really sort of frightening actually.

Is this the slip that he made on the campaign trail last year...or did he do it again?

I just heard it on Air America today, but I didn't hear the date. They could have been playing an old bit.

One, didn't the President or someone in the administration say or do this a long tme ago? I remember addressing this issue either on the old board or shortly after the new incarnation of this board.
Second, why does the gov. pulling rolls of high school juniors and seniors sound alarming? Right now, 18 year old men have to register anyway, despite there being an all-volunteer army. Also, students here on visas must be enrolled in high school and college courses or risk being deported. I know after 9/11 the government instituted policies requiring high schools and colleges to disclose information on them.
Third, I'm not aware of any public high school in the country that receives exclusive federal funds for operating costs. Typically, public high schools (excluding charter schools set up through the "no child left behind" act) are supported by property taxes in the majority of states in the country. What kind of federal funding are you referring? I'm not trying to be an ass, but I really don't know what you're referring to.

It APPEARS as though the government is suddenly more concerned with whether or not men are signing up for the draft, at least more so than previously. Which could potentially be a precursor to calling upon those men.

Chris_H_2,
To answer/address your questions....
One, I don't know.
Second, I wasn't alarmed by that, I was affirming alarm at/by the slip of the togue as not really being a slip at all (ala Freud).
Third, apparently public schools are getting some level of federal dollars, but for what programs I would not know. I recently saw a report on the subject equating the turning over of lists of names as "blackmail" relative to funding from the government. I'm 99.99% sure they said "federal funds" in the report, perhaps the meant "state".

I'm pretty sure parents are allowed to opt out of this. At least in my school district this is the case.
