I believe the most effective was the bus boycott. Since the blacks were so adamant about gaining respect, they decided to stop riding the buses all together. The buses became bare and this cost the city of Montgomery $1 million due to the money they weremissing from the riders. The City of Montgomery began to suffer so they asked all of the whites to start riding the buses and stop chauffeuring the black people (BD pg. 47). This didn’t really work so they tried to stop the boycott by falsifying advertisements in the newspapers. These tactics only strengthened the boycott which inevitably allowed blacksto sit in the same section of the bus as whites; which was covered under the fourteenthamendment. They succeeded by following the law and being nonviolent in their ways.


I felt that the least goal oriented protest was the Freedom Ride. It was thirteen CORE vounteers who were trying to make a statement by riding the bus interracially through different states (BD pg. 62). All they did was get each other killed. White supremists attacked the bus, killed everyone inside and burned the bus. Others tried to do this but it really did not accomplish anything that had not already been started by the bus boycott. The bus boycott and the sit-ins were being done nation wide where the Freedom Riders were getting to one city on a bus and then getting beaten or murdered.

I don't know. What was the assignment? Discuss the most and least effective means of protest? Other than her wording being a little harsh, it's a fair argument that that wasn't a very effective means of protest.

Yes that was the subject matter. Perhaps she is learning something, though I find this the most moronic of all her points. I dont see how it is a fair argument considering the sacrfices of these individuals in particular attracted the national news media and successfully kept the civil rights movement at the forefront of American politics. They achieved martyrdom within this context, and helped reignite and further motivate those involved. To downplay or belittle their deaths is absolutely ridiculous and I don't see it as a valid argument in any respect.
