From Slashdot ================
An anonymous reader writes "It seems that Google Print results are beginning to appear on searches. For those who don't know, Google has been scanning from libraries from some of the world's greatest universities in order to compile a freely accessible online library. An easy way to turn up these results is to simply type "book", and then whatever you want to search for. For instance, book origin of species will turn up the full text of Charles Darwin's controversial treatise. 20,000 leagues, Oliver Twist and Pride and Prejudice and more are all there in full. It'll be interestin to see how publishers deal with this if demand for these books declines. In the meantime, would anyone like to point out any good books?" Hopefully, Google can also start to index some books that are being released in the Creative Commons/alternative open licenses.
==================
I can't see how this is anything other than awesome. I think the next step is to have some sort of catalogue you can easily browse, instead of having to do a search. But still, I think it's a great project.

Except that I can't post the pages here as an image or select the text to quote it here. I guess you can link to the page you found.

Yes. I believe these are all actual physical scans of the books, which is why you can't copy the text.
I'm sure you're right, but I can't seem to copy the "image location" and post the actual image here either. Which, IMHO, sucks. Oh well, it's still an awesome tool.

Yes, they use some special software so that images are generated in a way that you cannot copy the exact location. This is very much on purpose. Even if you view the page source, you wont get the file location, but a long generated string. I dont see why this is that big of a deal. You can still link right to the pages if you wanted to.

Wasn't trying to make a big deal. I was just disappointed.

I thought about that, and this makes me think that Google could be setting themselves up for a copyright infringement lawsuit.

Depending on any given book's copyright restrictions, users might be able to view anything from the full text of a book to just a brief excerpt and/or bibliographic information.
Quote:
Google respects the rights of copyright holders and the tremendous creative effort of authors, which is why we're only allowing users to view the full texts of books when they're in the public domain. We will also show a few pages from a book when we have an agreement to do so from the publisher. Books that are still in copyright will show up in our search results, but users will only be able to view very small text snippets and/or bibliographic information until we get permission from the publisher to show full page views.
