(CNN) -- Entertainer George Carlin said Monday he is going into rehab because he has an alcohol and drug problem.
In a statement, Carlin, 67, said, "I'm going into rehab because I use too much wine and Vicodin. No one told me I needed this; I recognized the problem and took the step myself.
"My levels of use are nowhere near the worst you hear about these days; I could easily have continued functioning at a good level ... for awhile. But my use would have progressed, I would have been in deeper trouble, and I didn't want to tolerate that. I've never been in rehab before and I know it isn't easy, but I'm highly motivated, and will do what ever's needed.
"When I get out, I will take a little time for myself before resuming my schedule," the comedian added.
Carlin's current book, "When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?", is currently on best-seller lists.
Vicodin is a pain killer that is potentially habit forming.
Carlin's statement did not say where he go into rehab or when. According to Reuters, Carlin's spokesman, Jeff Abraham, said the comedian went into treatment Monday.
Three weeks ago, he ended a four-year run at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, with a "dark set," in the words of the New York Post's "Page Six" column, and told his audience, "People who go to Las Vegas, you've got to question their [bleeping] intellect," according to a report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
He is scheduled to appear in a show at Las Vegas' Stardust Hotel in February.

My favorite comedian. Bar none. Good to hear that he's responsible about it and didn't let it start to ruin his life. Hopefully he's being honest about that. Wine and vicodin.. could have been much worse.
im actually reading his book, napalm and silly putty
Good stuff. I was reading that one day in Boston Common while I was waiting to go to an interview nearby and I must've have looked ridiculous sitting on a park bench laughing my ass off but I couldn't help it.
I just got his new one When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops? for xmas.
Anyway, I wish him luck though I'm sure he'll be fine. He was strong enough to check himself in.
I've had vicodin before. It made me laugh for no reason for about 5-10 minutes and then it just has a soothing effect. So yeah...I can see how that can be addicting. Never tried to combine it with wine, but I'd imagine it would enhance the effect.
By the way, I swear I wasn't on Vicodin when I was reading Napalm and Silly Putty in the park.

best of luck to him. He is a hero of mine, and I think it is respectable that he noticing a small problem and dealing with it before it gets out of hand.
saw him last night on his first stop since rehab. he mentioned it right off the bat and apologized for having to use some notes. he's as funny as ever and super sharp. he started out with a bit called "modern man"; it was almost like rapping. he talked about suicide, our idiot president, and his love of natural disasters. to lighten the mood in between, there was talk of pussy farts, cornholes, vagina transplants, and other such thoughts that always kept him "out of the really good schools".

I think if I was 67 and addicted to vicodin and wine, I would want to go to rehab too. He is too funny to die now and he knows it. He still stays out of the tabloids. Going to rehab yourself just means you have never been caught.

he mentioned getting arrested in milwaukee in '72 for the dirty words thing. his wife came on stage to tell him that the fuzz was waiting for him, so he ditched all his coke by giving it to the band backstage.

I love him. Kudos to admitting he needed some help. My aunt's all fucked on the Vicodin - of course, she'll never admit it - she just brags about it all the time. (In between telling the other aunts how stuck up I am.)
I REALLY wanna get my mitts on his books, but I can never find them when I have the $$. (The bookstore selection around my way is pitiful.)
Anyone willing to lend me a copy? I'll mail it back when I'm finished. And I'm a superfast reader. . . =P
