WASHINGTON (AP) -- If Congress passes an energy bill, Americans may see more daylight-saving time.

Lawmakers crafting energy legislation approved an amendment Wednesday to extend daylight-saving time by two months, having it start on the first Sunday in March and end on the last Sunday in November.

"Extending daylight-saving time makes sense, especially with skyrocketing energy costs," said Rep. Fred Upton, R-Michigan, who along with Rep. Ed Markey, D-Massachusetts, co-sponsored the measure.

The amendment was approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee that is putting together major parts of energy legislation likely to come up for a vote in the full House in the coming weeks.

"The more daylight we have, the less electricity we use," said Markey, who cited Transportation Department estimates that showed the two-month extension would save the equivalent of 10,000 barrels of oil a day.

The country uses about 20 million barrels of oil a day.

-Sounds good to me. I wish Daylight Saving Time was a year-round thing. In the winter here, the sun sets around 4:15 PM. Very depressing.

Wow, now the American government thinks it can control the way time works.

You guys living in America better watch out. One more major fuck up or terrorist attack type thing and your government may outlaw gravity itself.

Wasn't that the original argument for daylight savings time and it ended up not saving one fucking watt of energy?

LEt's hope there's much more to this supposed Energy Bill than this fairly lame suggestion.

2 months of saving 10,000 barrels a day=600,000 barrels of oil per year

That's a whopping 3% of a day's usage of oil saved over the span of two months. Whoopee! Great job Congress!

I'd like to understand how Congress thinks that extending Daylight Savings Time from March to November is supposed to save (concerve) oil.

That is the biggest crock of shit I've ever heard. Changing the clock does not change the position of the sun in the sky, the postion changes naturally throughout the year. Having the sun UP at 4pm, 5pm, 6pm, 7pm, and even 8pm or 9pm, as the heat from the attic in the summer drops back into the house, but while the sun is still coming in the windows, means running MORE appliances (fans, air conditoners, etc.), not less. And how additional electrical usage translates to oil conservation is about as clear as mud to me.

Leave the damn clocks alone, give my my hour back, and let the sun do its thing.

Fucking Congress Clearly Has Way Too Much Free TIME on IT'S Hands, even after losing an hour.

How about working on Public Education, Health Care Reform, and Consumer Safety..... for starters, or perhaps working on how to disconnect Special Interest Groups from over-influencing Legistlation.....

...extend daylight savings time..... When is the Bull Shit going to END???

I've got something they can "extend", (*grabs crotch*)

Yes, it is a crock of shit.

That being said, I wish they would leave us in daylight savings time. It sucks ass when the sun is going down when you leave work. It gives you no time to do stuff outside after work.

How can this bill be anything but a help, regardless of how little energy it saves. It's better than nothing. We're not going to conserve energy by finding the magical solution that cuts our energy usgae by 50% overnight. But if we apply common sense to things, it's going to help somewhat.

As far as daylight savings time, it's purpose is to allow for hours of daylight to stay in the timeframe when most people are active (thus they don't need to turn on lights, etc). It does no good for it to get light out at 4:00 AM when everybody is sleeping. But if it gets light out at 5:00, at least people are beginning to roll out of bed and move about. And thus, instead of getting dark at 8:00, it gets dark at 9:00. That's one hour less of electricity to burn by having the lights on.

It's not rocket science people...nor is it the cure to our energy problems.

i changed my first post to say 3% of a day's supply, not .03%.

I understand the viewpoint that it's better than nothing, but let's face it, it's not much better than nothing at all. It's a drop in the bucket, excuse the pun. I just hope there is much more to this legislation that's going to make more of a difference than this.

I'm right with you on energy conservation and stuff.... but 3% is a pretty good change. Of course, I don't believe two months of daylight savings time will save that much oil.

I agree that it's not a massive savings, but for the amount of work that would be involved in such a legislation compared with how much energy we could save, I think it's well worth it. In fact, we should've done this earlier, before we got to "near crisis" level.

I see nothing to bitch about with this bill.

This is NOT the answer, and they are full of shit. Changing the clocks is NOT going to translate into saved barrels of oil. They are full of it.

Dude, it's 3% of ONE DAY'S USAGE. It will save 600,000 barrels of oil total over the two months.

We use 20,000,000 a day.

That's 7,300,000,000 a year.
