And ... still we wait.

Quote:
Black Smoke Signals No New Pope Elected
By WILLIAM J. KOLE, Associated Press Writer

VATICAN CITY - Black smoke poured from the Sistine Chapel's chimney Monday evening, signaling that the cardinals sequestered inside for the first papal conclave of the new millennium failed to elect a new pope.

The black smoke meant the 115 voting cardinal "princes" of the church would retire for the night and return to the chapel Tuesday morning for more balloting in their search for a successor to Pope John Paul II.

If two morning ballots fail to produce a pope, the cardinals could hold two more votes Tuesday afternoon.

Here's your front runner: Francis Arinze (Nigeria) 3 - 1

Here's a long shot, but I'm rooting for an Arabic Pope: Cardinal Ghattas (Egypt) 125 - 1

That is a damn fine band name. So how many people will admit to gaining most of their knowledge of this procedure from reading "Angels & Demons"? *raises hand*

Hmmm, I'll add it to my list.

I just got my "ultimate guide to the universe" so i have that series to read my way through starting tomorrow - after i knock out the last hundred pages or so of "the lovely bones" tonight.

I need more book money.

Note to the Early Show: No news may be good news, but it is NOT breaking news. Please stop referring to Black Smoke as "breaking news out of the Vatican." Save that phrase for white smoke.

If it was white, would the crowds still cheer?

Only if the bells were ringing also...and if they didn't confuse the sirens for bells.

Several thousand pilgrims and tourists who packed St. Peter's Square to stare at the slender stovepipe jutting from the chapel's brown tiled rooftop gasped when the smoke appeared just before noon.

Man, and we thought the Schiavo people had no life. How do you not have a job AND have enough money to fly to Rome and stare at a smokestack that you could see on any TV in the world?

They also have a counting clock: 1 day, 0 hours, 35 minutes, & 16 seconds since the start of the Conclave!

SMOKE SIGNAL | 11:56 a.m. ET

Smoke is coming from the chimney above the Sistine Chapel -- but it's uncertain whether it's the white smoke that would signal election of a new pope.

Can't they just do yellow smoke or blue smoke. Seriously ... this is hilarious.

They said JPII instituted a change in policy where the bells of St. Peters would ring if a new Pope were elected. This was because when JPII was elected, no one could tell whether the smoke was white or black.

It's official... in about 30 minutes the new pope will appear on the balcony.
