I filled in the lil thingie, and it makes sense to me.
6oz of grains
2.5 cups of veggies
2 cups of fruit
3 cups of milk
5.5 ounces meat/beans.

Sounds like a well balanced diet - problem is, if I spread all that out on a table, it's probably more than I already eat in a day.

8oz of grains

2 cups of fruit
3 cups of milk
6.5 meat/beans

Are they all this close? Did they really need to do 12 different triangles? Besides, I've got about 150lbs on you. This thing should just say, "Stop eating, fucker!"

Does the federal government need to tie your shoes for you as well?

I'm not going to demand that service, but if they offered it, I'd use it.

Yeah, why didn't they ask how much I weigh? All they asked was my age and how much I exercise outside of work (Hardly none - I run around w/ 1 year olds all day!). Wouldn't I need less food at 5'1/96 lbs than a chick who's 5'10/ 125 lbs????

This whole system is fucked. Dammit. I'm turning my back on healthy eating and heading back to work where my large chocolate-covered-strawberry-iced-latte awaits. **Cleans up Wendy's wrappers, and burps**

Goddamit!

When will everyone look around them and say,

"gee, Jane Doe looks healthy even though she is carrying 10 extra pounds, and so does John Doe, even though he carries 10 fewer pounds than he should...maybe this diet thing is really an individual physiology thing and we should stop trying to pigeonhole everyone into the same diet plan"????

Ugh...the gov't should just shut the fuck up on this one. Let the doctors and nutritionists handle it.

Not that I trust them either...

There's a foodtracker feature that lets you put in what you eat and how much you exercise. That even asks your height and weight. I thought, cool, I'll try that out, but it's soooooooo slow to add shit, I doubt I'll ever use it again.

The USDA has been giving nutritional guides for as long as I've been alive. Why is there so much rancor for that? I mean, sure a nutritionist could do a lot better, but how high does your income level have to be or how good does your insurance have to be before you regularly visit a nutritionist? Why shouldn't they give some guidance?

That being said, this particular guidance is stupid.

I think the better place for that guidance would be in the schools. Bundle it into the health education package.

Do you think enough kids would pay attention to even make that worth the effort? I personally don't think so. I know I didn't give a shit about what I ate back then.

Maybe not, but it'd be a better shot than this.

What makes you so fervent that this "my pyramid" thing is useless? I wont' go so far as to say it's as good as what you could get from a nutritionist, but to somebody with no knowledge of nutrition, it's a start. It's not like it gives bad information. Plus it gives that information to people of all ages, not just kids who aren't gonna give a shit what their teacher is telling them about what to eat and why.

I didn't imply that it was useless, I was implying that the gov't has better things to spend time any money on.

Looks like I don't see how offering free, informed nutritional advice to citizens is a bad thing or a waste of time/money.
