I don't know why, but I wanted to bring this up.
I'm against employers testing employees/potential employees for drugs.
Why? It's ridiculous. Company XYZ would gladly hire a raving, raging alcoholic that beats his kids, drinks and drives, and ignores his wife.
They WON'T hire a guy, like...PunkDavid..., who smokes a doob at a concert but is otherwise an upstanding citizen.
The state of drug enforcement in America is utterly fucking ridiculous.

I think it depends on your job. Bus drivers should be tested.

I agree. Plus, I don't see how a drug test can qualify you as a good or bad employee. I've known some good, hard-working, great workers and were surprised to know that they smoked pot on a regular basis. I don't really care if they do or not but I guess its surprising that sometimes it's the people you least suspect. There's this stigma that all people who smoke marijuana are pot heads and it's just not true.

I find it kinda funny, yet kind of sad, when the druggies get all scared of potential drug testing. If your job is that important why do you keep using heroin?

You're right, that is funny.
Actually if you're doing heroin at your job I have a feeling you'll get fired based on your work performance.

seriously, how did you make it to 23? Who's talking about heroin?
anyway, if an employer is going to test me for drug use, they could at least have the decency to wait until I work for them and fuck something up first.
Do I get to test my employers for being sexist/rapist/embezzlers/manipulators etc on the job?
Like it matters. You'd have to be pretty dumb to fail a drug test if all you did was smoke weed. There is all kind of shit you can take so they can't detect it.

Yes, but then you're a DISHONEST pot smoker.
I had a couple of friends who applied for jobs with the FBI and the CIA. In both cases, there were intensive background screenings, and among the questions they were asked was if they had ever used any illegal drugs.
The FBI is a law enforcement agency. They were most concerned with their employees obeying the law. If you say "yes", you're not going to get the job, period. So you lie to them and say you've never used drugs. Unless you have an arrest or one of your friends or references rats you out, you're OK.
The CIA is an intelligence agency. They are more concerned with you being honest with them. You'd be better off telling them the truth (as long as you're not still a regular user), because if you lie about anything and they even get a hint that you weren't being 100% honest with them, you're not getting the job.
It's funny how things work. As for testing in general private situations, I've elaborated on my position several times before and I don't feel like doing it again. Suffice it to say that I think job performance should be indicative of any drug "problem".

Um, I was kidding about the heroin thing. How'd you make it to your age without being able to detect a joke?
I work at a construction kinda place. If one of the guys was on something and caused an accident or death at a job site or on the way to a job site not only would he probably get in big time trouble (prison time, law suit perhaps?), but I have a feeling the company would as well for letting a drug user work at a construction site. I think for some types of jobs drug testing is certainly warranted.

It beats being an UNEMPLOYED pot smoker.
There's always fast food and gas station jobs available.

"Weed will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no weed."
And yes, there are definitely jobs that drug testing is warranted for, like construction. Not that being drunk on the job is any better and you can't test for that, but...

Why do you feel that employees should be able to make the rules at a job? Shouldn't the employeer be making the rules?
It has nothing to do with employees making the rules.
It's an invasion of privacy. It's legally permissible for employers to ask what people do in their free time? If you're not doing it at work or under the influence of something at work, it's none of your employers business.

I'll actually agree with you about specific types of industries being allowed to drug test.
Any jobs that involves your safety or the safety of others should (and probably do) have a number of requirements going in, including drug testing etc, that's at least logical. What isn't logical is how a company is allowed to dictate an employee's personal behavior as long the employee/potential employee gives no cause for that kind of intrusion.
These are businesses, they are not governments nor are they parents. If I'm a drug user and I go into a company and do a good job, they should thank their lucky stars for me because I'm making their money for them.

No see it has everything to do with employers making the rules. Its their damn company and they can set the rules as they wish. If they want everyone to wear yellow tshirts on Tuesday, then if the employee wants to work there then the employee should were a yellow tshirt on Tuesday. If you don't like the rules, then find another job. It really has little to do with you as an employee.
