COLUMBUS, Georgia (AP) -- A high school student was suspended for 10 days for refusing to end a cell phone call with his mother, a soldier serving in Iraq, school officials said.
The 10-day suspension was issued because Kevin Francois was "defiant and disorderly" and was imposed in lieu of an arrest, Spencer High School assistant principal Alfred Parham said.
The confrontation Wednesday began after the 17-year-old junior got a call at lunchtime from his mother, Sgt. 1st Class Monique Bates, who left in January for a one-year tour with the 203rd Forward Support Battalion.
Cell phones are allowed on campus but may not be used during school hours. When a teacher told him to hang up, he refused. He said he told the teacher, "This is my mom in Iraq. I'm not about to hang up on my mom."
Parham said the teen's suspension was based on his reaction to the teacher's request. He said the teen used profanity when taken to the office.
"Kevin got defiant and disorderly," Parham said. "When a kid becomes out of control like that they can either be arrested or suspended for 10 days. Now being that his mother is in Iraq, we're not trying to cause her any undue hardship; he was suspended for 10 days."

I'll also go with "why do kids need cell phones at school?"
When I was in high school, you could get suspended for having a beeper, even if it wasn't on, because everyone knows that beepers are used by drug dealers.

Ever been a teacher. My dad was a teacher for 32+ years and I exactly what his reaction to this post would have been. If one kid does it then the rest will. So how can you impose a rule where cell phones aren't allowed to be used, yet allow 1 kid to use the cell phone?
Secondly, you can't talk to teachers that way and think you are going to get away with it.
Thirdly, I don't care if god was calling on the cell phone.

So they're allowed to have them on campus, but not allowed to use them? Even during lunch? Why not?

Who cares why not. The fact is the aren't allowed. Seems simple enough to me.

To bad for Kevin his Mom is in Iraq. All he needs is for her to come to the school and bitch. Georgia Administrators piss in their pants when confronted by a parent but that's a different problem.
Screw it. It's worth 10 days, that's assinine. His mom is in Iraq for a year and he's lucky if he ever gets a chance to talk to her in or out of school, bend the rules geez. Idiots. Zero tolerance = zero thought.
If he would have held the profanity he would have been ok, but I understand, at 17, I have done the exact same thing.
Georgia public schools 50th in the nation, making it more obvious everyday.

in lieu of an arrest,
I agree that you should enforce your rule, but don't you let the kid finish the call and then make him stay after school that day? How do you give him a 10 day suspension?

Shit, I forgot kids had no rights and schools could rule in any way they deemed appropriate, no matter how silly.
Yeah teachers and administrators just sit around everyday making up rules because they want to torture kids. Give me a break.
clearly you didn't attend school in Georgia. It's not like this kid is talking to little Timmy from the next classroom, it's his mom, in IRAQ for a year, if he dosen't take the call he might not get to hear from her. In the real world, outside of the ridiculousness that is government schools, when you recieve a very important call you can step out and take it. School is supposed to prepare you for life, the way they handled that, was absolutely stupid.

Obviously I didn't attend school in Georgia because my poor reading comprehension is just slightly better than yours.

Using innapropriate words when one is upset warrents a 10 day suspension? Ok. What did he do hurt her feelings? I understand, I still think descresion should have been used in this case. If any suspension is warrented, perhaps a day for insubordination is acceptable. 10 days is ridiculous especially considering the circumstances.
Anyway, this is another story, of a completely different manner, another example of the loons in charge of public schools in Georgia.

Let me ask you this, don't you think that the author of the article thought it was more important to clue the reader into the very first paragraph the fact that his mom was an officer in Iraq, than the fact that he used profanity against a teacher?
The headline was this:
Student suspended over call from mom in Iraq
But really the headline should have been this:
Student suspended over call because he used profanity against a teacher.
