Online casino buys fence from site of JFK's assassination
CHICAGO (AFP) - An online casino has bought a white picket fence from the grassy knoll in Dallas, Texas that overlooked US president John F. Kennedy's motorcade when he was assassinated in 1963.
The gambling website, which has made a name for itself with outrageous stunts and acquisitions, paid 32,664.47 dollars (27,030.96 euros) for the weathered picket fence which is marked with reams of graffiti.
One bit of homemade poetry reads "They shall be same though they sink through the sea, They shall rise again" while other markings include names, symbols, dates, Biblical passages, simple tributes like "RIP, JFK" and opinions like "Oswald Was Framed" and "Blame the Government," the auction house catalogue said.
Nearly 80 percent of Americans believe the charismatic Democratic was killed as a result of a conspiracy, according to the Sixth Floor Museum which is located in the old book depository from which Lee Harvey Oswald is said to have shot Kennedy.
Conspiracy theorists have long argued that the shots that killed the president came from behind the fence at the top of the grassy knoll.
Over the years the fence has faded from white to gray while some the paint has been stripped completely from some of the pickets. It has also been repaired a number of times but auction house Lelands.com said the wooden cross members that make up the main frame, and the metal posts, are original and predate 1963.
Montreal-based GoldenPalace.com beat 13 other bids and paid more than six times the reserve price for the fence that was salvaged by a tour guide in 2000.
Officials from GoldenPalace.com were not available for comment because of a holiday in Quebec.
The website's most famous acquisition was a grilled cheese sandwich that bears the image of the Virgin Mary. It has also bought Marilyn Monroe's personal address book, Britney Spears' Pregnancy Test, and Pope Benedict XVI's previously-owned VW Golf.
With buying all this crazy shit plus the streakers they've had at various sporting events, Golden Palace really knows how to get their name out.
The most interesting thing in that article was the statistic that 80% of Americans believe the Kennedy assassination was a conspiracy. That seems very high to me.
