June 24, 2005 -- Detectives are searching for a bank robber who they suspect hurt his privates.
The Midtown heist suspect was spotted stuffing a "dye pack" — money affixed with an explosive charge that spews red dye — inside the front of his pants moments before the device exploded, scattering bills all over Sixth Avenue.
At 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, the bandit walked into a Commerce Bank branch on Sixth Avenue at 44th Street, approached a teller and shouted, "Give me the money or I'll shoot you!"
The teller handed over about $1,100 wrapped around the dye pack.
Cops have made a series of discreet inquiries to several hospitals, hoping to learn if any emergency room patient had sought treatment for an unusual groin injury.
The suspect — who now may be far more than red-faced with embarrassment — was described as a thin white man in his mid 30s, about 5-foot-5 and 150 pounds. He has a mustache and beard and was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt, a Yankees cap and large sunglasses
