A black man was hospitalized with a fractured skull and a white teenager was jailed without bail Thursday after a baseball bat assault that drew instant comparison to one of New York's most heinous racial attacks and praise for the city's markedly different response
Nicholas Minucci, an unemployed 19-year-old, was charged Thursday with first-degree assault as a hate crime, robbery and weapons possession. Detectives also arrested Anthony Ench, 21, whom they described as Minucci's accomplice in the robbery and beating with an aluminum bat.
Frank Agostini, the 20-year-old son of a police detective, surrendered to police and was being described as a witness to the crime in Howard Beach, Queens.
The largely white neighborhood became synonymous with racial strife in many minds after a 1986 attack on three black men by a gang of whites. Protesters including the Rev. Al Sharpton were taunted with racial slurs when they marched into Howard Beach after the attack, which left one man dead.
On Thursday, the mood across the city was mostly calm as New Yorkers digested what officials called an unprovoked attack on Glenn Moore, 22, who suffered multiple skull fractures and a bruised kidney. Police said Moore's shoes were stolen and an earring was torn from his ear after the beating.
Minucci's lawyer charged at his arraignment Thursday that Moore provoked the attack by holding a screwdriver to Minucci's neck.
Police and prosecutors said Minucci's account was not credible, although one of the two friends who walked into Howard Beach with Moore before the attack around 3 a.m. Wednesday acknowledged he had been intending to steal a car. That friend said Moore was unaware of the plan, officials said.
Prosecutors said Moore's assailants hurled racial slurs and allegedly told him, "That is what you get when you try to rob white boys."
Police said a hammer, nails and pliers were found near the scene of the attack. Moore's family told reporters he had the tools to hang shoes on a wall as decoration.
Bloomberg and police Commissioner Ray Kelly on Wednesday night condemned the attack as a bias crime.
"Things are very different than 20 years ago in Howard Beach, where there was an incident and there were lots of allegations that the government did not take seriously hate crimes," Bloomberg said. "I think if you look today, this city has learned a lesson."
Sharpton stood Thursday with Moore's mother outside Jamaica Hospital, where Moore was in critical but stable condition, and mixed his condemnation of the attack with praise for Bloomberg's reaction.
"The city cannot go back to the '80s," Sharpton said. "We think that the tone set by the mayor reaching out is good."
Dr. Geoffrey Doughlin, the hospital's chair of emergency medicine, said Moore was talking and was expected to leave the hospital within a week.
Politicians and community activists attributed New York's relative calm to the long-term cooling of racial tensions in the city, which was divided in the 1980s and 1990s by ugly incidents in neighborhoods such as Howard Beach, Bensonhurst and Crown Heights.
"It's totally different," said Ed Koch, who was mayor during the 1986 Howard Beach incident and is supporting Bloomberg's re-election campaign. "We're all minorities. There isn't a majority in this town anymore."
Bloomberg and Kelly have been largely able to avoid racial strife in the wake of potentially explosive incidents, such as the shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer on a Brooklyn rooftop and a mistaken raid on the apartment of a Harlem woman who died of cardiac arrest after police set off a stun grenade.

What does everyone think about this? Honestly, those law following african american children should have known that you dont go into a big Italian neighborhood at three in the morning, looking to steal a car, and not expect to get some shit started.
Although I saw somewhere today that Minucci is friends with the Gotti's and was actually on an episode of growing up Gotti. He was also arrested a few years ago for stabbing his neighbor. The neighbor was due to testify against him when he suddenly found himself falling infront of a subway car, and died. I've watched Goodfellas enough to know you dont fuck with Italians, because you never know who has connections

Clever.
I don't think this was a race attack... as they are trying to make it into. The same thing would've happened to anybody, white yellow purple orange whatever, who disrespected this particular person like that. It justs so happens he shouted out the wrong word in a fit of rage... Add to that the location of the attack.
I just don't see this as being race related. If the stories of Glen Moore trying to rob this kids car are true... this is no different than me fucking a black guys girlfriend, and than him getting charged with a hate crime for beating my ass afterwards.
