this is more common than people think. people who use insulin to control diabetes are usually using insulin derived from a cow or pig. my dad is a vegan and a diabetic, so his insulin is derived from human sources: called "humulin".

I apologize in advance, but I can't help laughing at that. I just can't conceive of holding vegan ideals so closely that one would be willing to risk their own life by not using insulin derived from an animal. I respect the ideals, but there has got to be a tipping point where they become absurd, and dying would seem to be beyond that point. I'm glad your dad has a vegan alternative medicine, but what would he do if he didn't?
So in answer to the question, this Jew would have no problem living with a pig's heart pumping in his chest.

Penn and Teller painted a PETA member as a hypocrite because she used such insulin that kiddo mentioned, including a quote something along the lines of "I'm justified because I'm fighting for animal rights".

given that my dad's life depends on taking insulin (type I diabetes), i would bet that he would have taken the cow insulin if no other alternative were available. but the alternative was readily available and not a big deal.

I figured as much.
It makes you wonder about the person(s) who pushed to make the "humalin" readily available though.

i just did a quick search: humulin was created in 1978...which is good for my dad because he was dx'ed in 1981. it is not made from humans, rather made synthetically in the lab from "recombant DNA". other insulins are a combo of pig and cow insulins.
i did not dig into why it was created, but my guess is that there was a growing demand for it as the vegetarian craze started to gain steam in the 70's. (my dad became a vegetarian in 1976).

I don't have a problem with animal spare parts as long as the animals didn't have cloven hooves.

veganism is a strange thing. i have a friend who is a vegan and feeds her cat regular catfood...but they spent like 2 years trying to convert the cat to veganism....a bit ridiculous if you ask me. At some point you just have to accept the law of the land. animals tend to eat animals.
