this is more common than people think. people who use insulin to control diabetes are usually using insulin derived from a cow or pig. my dad is a vegan and a diabetic, so his insulin is derived from human sources: called "humulin".

Penn and Teller painted a PETA member as a hypocrite because she used such insulin that kiddo mentioned, including a quote something along the lines of "I'm justified because I'm fighting for animal rights".

i just did a quick search: humulin was created in 1978...which is good for my dad because he was dx'ed in 1981. it is not made from humans, rather made synthetically in the lab from "recombant DNA". other insulins are a combo of pig and cow insulins.
i did not dig into why it was created, but my guess is that there was a growing demand for it as the vegetarian craze started to gain steam in the 70's. (my dad became a vegetarian in 1976).

I don't have a problem with animal spare parts as long as the animals didn't have cloven hooves.

veganism is a strange thing. i have a friend who is a vegan and feeds her cat regular catfood...but they spent like 2 years trying to convert the cat to veganism....a bit ridiculous if you ask me. At some point you just have to accept the law of the land. animals tend to eat animals.
