I have no idea what Raw Story is, but they're saying Renquist is resigning by the end of the week. The link was posted on Air America Radio.

Quote:
Rehnquist may resign tomorrow

Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist may resign as early as tomorrow, Senate aides tell RAW STORY.

The tip circulated among progressive circles late Thursday.

Other aides later confirmed to RAW STORY that the retirement was very much expected. Democrats and Republicans have long been preparing for exit of the ailing Chief Justice.

His farewell would escalate a fight over judicial nominees, increasing the number of open seats to two, falling just days after the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Rehnquist's retirement was suggested earlier today by conservative columnist Robert Novak who relies on a bevy of anonymous Republican sources.

Novak suggested that Rehnquist's departure could allow President Bush to nominate Alberto Gonzales. The veteran conservative pundit said he expected no change in the ideological balance of the court.

"Word from court sources that ailing Chief Justice William Rehnquist also will announce his retirement before the week is over," Novak wrote today. "That would enable Bush to play this game: Name one justice no less conservative than Rehnquist, and name Gonzales, whose past record suggests he would replicate retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on abortion and possibly other social issues. Thus, the present ideological orientation of the court would be unchanged, which would suit the left just fine."

According to one source, Republican judiciary aides have told other staffers to be prepared for a possible resignation tomorrow between 10 and 11 am.

Rehnquist has been suffering from thyroid cancer and was widely expected to resign when the court closed its term earlier this month.

Well, it seems to be talking about Friday the 8th, but it was written on Friday the 8th and keeps saying "tomorrow." I don't know ... a lot of red flags here. I don't think it's true.

Is Bush back from the G-8 summit yet? It seems a little curious that Rehnquist would tender his resignation to the White House while Bush is overseas.

I added a question mark to the end of the title. That gave me a bit of a false alarm. :P

The Guardian posted a schedule for protests which ended yesterday.

For the record, the People Open Golf Tournament sounds like it would have kicked ass!!! 8)

Well given the appointer, I am inclined to agree, but if what I'm reading (and the little idea I have) about the USSC is correct, they don't come much more conservative than Rehnquist, so we're probably good for this one.

The replacement for O'Connor is a bigger worry for me, and probably for you too.

Past 11. Maybe it's talking about Saturday. Doesn't Bush take all of his weekends off?

Worse as in:

more conservative (if that is possible)

more hell bent on reversing roe v wade

edit: yes, I am more worried about the O'Connor replacement

My point is, why would any of this matter if the replacement is for Rehnquist, where all of these things you mention are present to begin with? The nominee is definitely not going to be pro-choice and liberal.

I have to agree, O'Conner is the one who will be fuckin' the liberals. Because Billy was always a conserv and mostly voted that way, so replacing him will not change anything, unless they put Pat Robertson onn the court. The swing vote/moderate that O'Conner provided will be more crucial in huge america-altering decisions.

Bob Novak says he has a good source: Rehnquist is retiring.

How about Stevens now for the trifecta. Now that would be fun.

And Novak knows good sources.

Um, no thank you.

I just checked this out. The last time a Supreme Court Justice died while still serving was when Vinson, CJ, died in September 1953. That surprised me, I thought there had been a death in office in my lifetime.
