I'm so tired of hearing the republicans prattle on about this. They say those who don't want to drill in the federally protected alaskan wilderness are making us less safe because we can use that oil....

THe only problem with that argument is it's pure bullshit. Even when compared to the best estimates of oil in alaska raising the fuel efficiency standards just 3 more miles to the gallon would save us much more oil than what we'd get out of alaska. Why won't we do this you ask? Because Dick Cheney says it is "unfair to ask of the auto industry" How the fuck is it unfair!? I thought we were talking about making us safe and not reliant on foreign sources? I wonder if it's unfair becuase the auto industry has given $2,282,943 to Bush/Cheney for this election?

also if bush is ever so worried about relying on foreign sources why did he cancel Clinton's deadline for auto makers to develop prototypes that run on alternative fuel sources?

Come one, wake the fuck up, how can oil execs (bush, cheney, rice....) really be concerned with something that will make them less money?

Can anyone guess who said this?

Quote:
On the OPEC front, once again, America and the world is getting hosed by this greedy outfit. We never seem to learn with these people and its our own fault.

Saudi Arabia is nobody's friend. It is one of the richest kingdoms on earth, but it is cutting back oil production so it can make even more money, at the expense of the world economy.

I mean enough is enough. The Bush administration and the Clinton administration before it did absolutely nothing to develop a sane energy policy. We do not conserve fuel in America. We buy gas guzzlers -- and we guzzle all day long.

We have lagged on developing fuel cells that could power vehicles because the big oil companies don't want that.

We have failed to impose fuel standards on vehicles because auto companies don't want that.

So YOUR wallet is lighter -- and the economy suffers. We remain hostage to OPEC. How dumb is this?

Drilling in the Arctic is a stop-gap. High-tech development and conserving fossil fuels are the most effective weapons against the OPEC crowd.

so no bush backer cares to comment on how Bush isn't doing all he can to make us safe? Such fucking hypocrites, I guess if there's no little insignificant fact you can use as your argument you just outright dismiss it. Typical

"Something for the rag and bone man
"Over my dead body"
Something big is gonna happen
"Over my dead body"

Someone's son or someone's daughter
"Over my dead body"
This is how I end up getting sucked in
"Over my dead body"

I'm gonna go to sleep
Let this wash all over me

We don't wanna wake monster taking over
"Tiptoe round tie him down"
We don't want the loonies taking over
"Tiptoe round tie them down"

May pretty horses
Come to you
As you sleep
I'm gonna go to sleep
Let this wash
All over me"

Bush and his allies, and all Republicans for that matter, are convinced that anything against him will mean they are anti-American.

As far as this thread goes, we must research new technologies, and quickly, if we are able to stop our dependence upon foreign oil and prevent us from drilling domestically. This means more money in education, but the Republicans seem to think that science is all just myths and theories these days (stem cell research, the theory of evolution, homosexuality). Plus, we can't forget about Bush and Cheney's friends in the oil business - so alternatives to oil are looking more and more unlikely these days.

To respond to the last poster: typically, Republicans never want to have debate outside of their own rules, which generally are set under Christianity. How many atheists do you know are voting for Bush?

Cold Turkey
by Kurt Vonnegut

Many years ago, I was so innocent I still considered it possible that we could become the humane and reasonable America so many members of my generation used to dream of. We dreamed of such an America during the Great Depression, when there were no jobs. And then we fought and often died for that dream during the Second World War, when there was no peace.
But I know now that there is not a chance in hell of America’s becoming humane and reasonable. Because power corrupts us, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Human beings are chimpanzees who get crazy drunk on power. By saying that our leaders are power-drunk chimpanzees, am I in danger of wrecking the morale of our soldiers fighting and dying in the Middle East? Their morale, like so many bodies, is already shot to pieces. They are being treated, as I never was, like toys a rich kid got for Christmas.
-------------------------
When you get to my age, if you get to my age, which is 81, and if you have reproduced, you will find yourself asking your own children, who are themselves middle-aged, what life is all about. I have seven kids, four of them adopted.
Many of you reading this are probably the same age as my grandchildren. They, like you, are being royally shafted and lied to by our Baby Boomer corporations and government.
I put my big question about life to my biological son Mark. Mark is a pediatrician, and author of a memoir, The Eden Express. It is about his crackup, straightjacket and padded cell stuff, from which he recovered sufficiently to graduate from Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Vonnegut said this to his doddering old dad: “Father, we are here to help each other get through this thing, whatever it is.â€
