This might be a silly topic and one you'd rather not reply or speak about, but I figure just because of personal experience around these parts lately, I'd offer the following discussion.
One thing that I've really thought about debate resources and approaches is how an opponent in a forum often looks for the one sentence or statement that turns your argument around or perhaps just makes you look lke a seedier, darker character. And then if you apologize and clarify or even retract, you are still held to the same standards of the time you made the initial statement. It's just kind of like one of those, "Apology accepted, BUT STILL..."scenarios where you never quite shake it off. In my opinion, this just isn't right. It is how it is, but I don't think it's the best way to maintain the edge.
I'm sure there's some Latin argumentum ad something or other phrasing, but maybe somebody knows about this off the top of their head. I just can't stand when politicians let these kinds of things fester and even people you consider colleagues just never allow you to turn a corner and redeem or explain yourself. It's distressing, but I often write it off as a rat bastard-kind of thing to hold on to. I know that I try to allow people to explain themselves or maybe reconsider before jumping to conclusions. So how do you feel about this and other aspects of debate?
God bless,
Jared

Don't you call ME a rat bastard! Man, look at the name calling!
1) give people the benefit of the doubt: not everyone gets their primary point across the first time around
2) question respectfully
3) name-calling is counterproductive
4) when pissed off, think before you post
5) when all is done and nothing has been accompished, agree to disagree and move on
I try to always follow these rules, but I don't always succeed.
