I had said I would post this picture, but since I didn't want to revive that thread, I'll just start it in a new one and let people post their own opinions and conclusions about the raw data.

**Keep in mind, on this map Bush is BLUE, and Gore is RED.

Link to picture here.

For a full size picture, double click the picture.

Edited by GH--sorry, but that picture is stretching out the the screen. I think you're trying to fix it, but I'm not sure if it can be.

Thanks to ol' Blaine County (the big red one just north west of the Great Salt Lake), Idaho was spared from not having even one county go for Gore. Utah and Wyoming hold that title instead.

I remember a commercial with Michael Reagan (forgot what he was advertising) that offered a free t-shirt that had this graphic on it to show that "Bush won big".

Cuz if it werent for the elctoral college no one would pay attention to the midwest and all politicians would appeal to NY, Cali and Texas. Look at how little amount of counties Gore had in Cali and still won california... Without the EC you could essentially campaign in 4 states and win the election.

I was talking about this a lot last night, and I am becoming more convinced that thanks to the larger access of media, thanks to the Internet and other places, that this will become less of an issue and that everyone can be reached by a campaign.

That's not the main reason behind the electoral college. The reason is to keep say California from being freaked out by a major earthquake and voting our next president in, who is a nut job, but puts all his time and money into earthquake protection, meanwhile fucking over the rest of the country. Get the jist of it? It to keep histaria under control. The electoral college works.

Well, I don't rely heavily on any of them. There are other places to go, y'know.

Well yah thats just a more micro type of example. Like I said. Apealing to a single state or two to win the pop vote.

Well yah, obviously but lets face it most Americans are too lazy to research or read and rely heavily on spoonfed material.

I'm not quite following. Do you really think that a majority of one huge area could be convinced so easily by just one issue? And if so, how could that not be manipulated in the current system?

And whose fault is that?

I'm not completely abdicating media responsibility, but the buck stops with what people decide to watch.

I think cuz in the current system it DOESNT rely on the pop vote. So any politician making claims to appeal to, lets say, all of Texas would be going out on a huge limb to just get their EC votes. or for Cali, if you could only get X amount of votes you cant put all of your campaign into it and forget about 15 other states because they are more balanced.

Well I dunno whose fault it is. Thats an entirely different discussion that could be nature vs. nurture...but regardless, The cable news people also effect the casual watcher, it isnt necesarily the dedicated people only that are effected.

The president needs to be someone who reaches out to each region of our country fairly. The agenda in of people in different parts of the country is different. The electoral college is put into place to stablize this. Yes, people in a particular region can act on emotion and not use their senses because of certain situations pertaining to their geographical region. Again, someone is Califorinia can have a very different agenda than someone in New York. The electoral college is sort of an insurance to help stable this.

Yah, to piggy back on LikeAn Ocean. Think about the density of population. Its not in the midwest or farming field its in the cities. You could appeal to city life and ignore, for the most part, agriculture and win the election. Technically it woukd be fair but morally and ethically youd fuck over a bunch of farmers who depend on that for their familes. Good example LikeanOcean.

I could not, for the life of me, explain the electoral college to my friend last night. I used to think the same way about it before it finally made sense. Al Gore was a supporter of it dispite his popular vote win and electoral loss. The people who founded this country had good reasoning behind it and any smart politician would understand its significance.
