Just got the utility bill for August. Natural gas went from $1.09 a therm to
$1.61 a therm. The electic rates also climbed 1/2 cent per kw. What this means to me is that living in Minnesota this winter my utility bill will be around
$400 a month. Looks like a shi@#y Christmas for my family this year.

I sell firewood on the side during the fall and winter. It's going to be like sitting on top of a gold mine.

I am going to buy a new furnace, the 50 year old original has seen better days. This is about all I can do unless I build a new house. I put in new windows, doors, and siding two years ago. Last year I added insulation to the attic and changed all of my light bulbs to the energy efficient ones. I am going to try that plastic wrap over the windows as well. Any other ideas from other home owners would be appreciated.

Make sure you have an electric thermostat -- you can cut your energy bills by 15% a month during the winter. Set it for lower temperatures during the day when you're not there and at night when you're sleeping.
