I miss the old days when principals were mean old bastards that everyone in school was scared to death of.

Teen's overdose leads to Pike principal's arrest

BOY ALLEGEDLY INGESTED MUSHROOMS AT SCHOOL OFFICIAL'S HOME

By Lee Mueller

EASTERN KENTUCKY BUREAU

PIKEVILLE - A Pike County elementary school principal was arrested Saturday after a 17-year-old boy apparently overdosed on hallucinogenic mushrooms at his home, state police said.

Kyle Tackett, 32, a well-regarded principal at G.F. Johnson Elementary School at Virgie, "admitted to doing mushrooms" after police responded to his 911 call and the teenager was admitted to Pikeville Medical Center at 2:57 a.m. Saturday, according to an arrest citation. The teen's condition was not available yesterday.

Tackett was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor; second-degree possession of a controlled substance, first offense; possession of marijuana; and first-degree unlawful transaction with a minor.

Pike County school officials suspended Tackett with pay yesterday, and his supporters expressed shock and dismay.

Test scores at G.F. Johnson are the highest in the system, and Tackett -- a minister esteemed by parents and his staff -- has been considered one of the district's "rising stars," supporters said.

Tackett was principal at Grapevine Elementary until it closed two years ago.

"I think it took everyone by surprise," said Tonia Hopson, the district's instructional supervisor, who substituted yesterday for Tackett at the K-5 school.

He had been absent from school before last weekend, recovering from an injury, she said.

"The faculty loved him and so did the kids," Hopson said. "It's been a little bit teary-eyed here today."

Trooper Ivan Sewell said Tackett initially told a 911 dispatcher at 2:57 a.m. Saturday that a boy had been assaulted at his home. After meeting the boy in the road at Tackett's home, Sewell went into the principal's living room.

"We searched the premises and found several drugs," Sewell wrote.

Tackett was placed in the Pike County Detention Center at 6:30 a.m. and released at 2:20 p.m. after posting a $10,000 cash bond, jail officials said. Arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 28 in Pike District Court.

This also serves to strengthen my idea that the worst decision I made after college was moving back to KY.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. Probably just an amatuer who didn't know how to hold his drugs. But the word overdose sells more newspapers, so.....

I think that the newspaper's idea of "OD" would be your or my idea of "freaked out".

That's where this happened. Or are you saying this is minor compared to other f'ed up shit that happens in Pikeville? Are you close to Pikeville where you live in Virginia? That's one of the strange things about living in KY. If you're like me and live in either Lex. or Louisville, the rest of the state might as well be in another country for the amount of time you would spend there.

When I was in HS, one of the local elementary teachers would let us party at her house. She figured that we were going to do it anyway, so she'd rather us be somewhere safe. This still goes on, 12 years later.

I'm surprised that someone hasn't ruined that after 12 years.

Yeah, but I have to always try to remain aware of the inherent irony of us being from KY and calling other people from KY hillbillies. :)

These cats in Eastern KY are off the chart though. I'm rarely surprised anymore by any tales from the mountains. Its like the wild west or something. The biggest criminals & drug dealers in the region are the people in gov't. Sheriff's depts. running drug rings, Meth labs up every other "holler", Doctors pushing Oxy and assorted other pills out the front door of their family practices. Crazy. Don't worry Yankees, the south will never rise again, we're all ripped out of our minds.

I know. Especially since she lives in the same neighboorhood as a lot of us did, just around the corner from the school and athletic fields.

Times like these I wish those areas were in another country. I'm glad I'm in the big city and not down in BFE

I used to live about an hour from Pikeville in VA. It seems like I heard of many underaged drug overdoses, inappropriate student / teacher relationships, beastility, you name it. Just a lot of stuff for such a small town. But hey, thats eastern KY for ya.

Eastern KY, southwest VA, southern WV, and eastern TN. For me its a love and hate relationship. On one hand, I love to solitude that these places bring, along with the natural beauty and sense of peace one gets from being amongst the mountains and rural way of life. On the other hand, every local government is corupt, education is piss poor, and people act like animals. But hey, I guess Im here to stay.

Why is that loretta lynn/Jack white song popping up in my head

High on a mountain top
We live, we love, and we laugh a lot
Folks up here know what they got
High on a mountain top
High on a mountain top

Where the rest of the world's
Like a little bitty spot
I ain't comin down no never I'm not
High on a mountain top
High on a mountain top

Where I come from the mountain flowers grow wild
The blue grass sways like it's goin out of style
God fearin' people simple and real
'Cause up on the ridge folks that's the deal
Well my daddy worked down in the dark coal mine
Shovelin' that coal one shovel at a time
Never made a lot money din't have much
But we're high on life and rich in love

(Chorus)

Well down in the holler lived my uncle Joe
He'd pull out his fiddle and rosin his bow
We'd all sing and dance
And we ain't gonna stop
When the moon shine flows behind every rock

(Chorus)

Well we lay on our backs and we count the stars
'cause up here folks heaven's not that far

(Chorus)

High on a mountain top
High on a mountain top

Just as long as they stay on their mountains, I don't have a problem with them
