In the months leading up to the election it seemed like the country was split into two factions, the Republicans and Democrats. Now obviously this isn't different from any other time but it seemed to be more elevated. People were standing up for their candidates. Some even going to extreme measures like tearing down signs in people's front lawns.
Now I realize that everyone isn't happy with how things went, i.e. Bush getting re-elected. But do you guys think that the country will return to being a little bit more unified like it was in the times before the elections and campaigns started???

If this forum is any indicator, then no.

If "unify" means that liberals and atheists must take up the Bible and conservative ideologies or leave the country, I'm leaving.
Republicans run the country nearly 100% now, and so its expected that they are going to have to have their way sometimes. But they have to be sympathetic. Knowing their record, they probably won't be as much as I'd like them to be

I can honestly say that I don't see that happening. Bush isn't a moderate who might do some things that more liberal-minded people will like: he's an extremist from the right. People are going to look for reasons to continue to dislike him and you know what? I'm willing to be they'll find them. Plus, Bush needn't worry about being a unifier. In fact, he can do whatever the hell he wants since he doesn't have to give a second thought as to what will be said about him in the next election: he can't run again.

I realize that people are still going to hate Bush and feel bitter feelings towards him. I'm simply talking about the general public. In the days leading up to the election I saw numerous people getting into verbal fights over the issues and the candidates. Do you think won't be so severe and that people will be able to go back to being civilized somewhat?

Putting it that way, I don't think that things will be as heated. But I do hope people still retain some of that passion. It made me almost proud when I saw classmates of mine actually giving a damn about something.

nope. There's a majority of people in this country who are of the opinion that society is defined by image rather than action.
Until or unless that changes, the country will always be divided.
No one is going to conceed a point to anyone else who holds opinions that are in direct opposition to theirs. It's all about a power thing. "My idea is better than yours" might as well be "my rock is bigger than yours and if you disagree I'll bonk you on the head with it."
